Shows birth as 16 Jun 1874[5]
"WHK was an engineer how helped lay the railroad lines of America.
"WHK was the engineer in charge of construction of the Stone Arch
Railroad Bridge across the Mississippi River between Minneapolis and St.
Paul. James R. Hill
was the RR President then--in 1883 when it was built. In fairly recent
years, one span was altered to allow shipping to move further upstream.
When it weas originally built its location was considered the "head
of navigation." In 1975 the 93 year old bridge was declaired a National
Engineering Landmark, amid special ceremonies and applause.

"WHK also worked for the New York Central in NY State. During some
summer school vacations the family moved near his work. One summer at
Tarrytown on the Hudson River, Edith recalled the large spotlights of
the excursion boats shining towards them on shore.
"WHK was one of the engineers in charge of laying rails for the Great
Western Railroad across the west.
"ABOUT COSTA RICA - WHK was the engineer for the building of the
link that completed the railroad across Costa Rica from the Atlantic to
the Pacific Ocean. He used to say that he "joined the last trans-continental
railroad in North America." He was there about two years 1908-09--accompanied
by two engineer sons, Warren and Herbert, also daughter Ruth served as
his secretary, housekeeper (tent), local nurse assistant, etc. in rugged
jungle conditions. They were there during an earthquake that required
some pretty demanding measures."[6]
