Obergurgl, Part 3

Usually, sequels aren't as good as the original movie. There are exceptions- "Godfather, Part II", and "The Empire Strikes Back" are great examples. But a good third movie is even harder to find. Rocky III was all right, but that was mostly due to Mister T. Usually, the result is something awful like "Police Academy 3" or "American Pie: The Wedding".

But I digress. My opening exposition was intended to illustrate that we decided to go back to our alpine holiday village of Obergurgl once again to spend our third Christmas high up in the Ötz valley.

There was lots and lots of snow, and also sunshine, below-zero temperatures, good food and wine, and a great time was had by all.

The usual rules apply; click on a photo to see it in full-size (click on it again to come back), and click on the links to find out something interesting or amusing.

We decided to fly into Münich and drive into Obergurgl. Thankfully, my teenage experience driving in Minneapolis prepared me for the snowy roads.

We had a couple of beautiful clear days before Christmas, when we had the slopes to ourselves.

Here is an exceedingly rare photo of all three of us on the piste.

Although Don is turning grey, this dusting is merely fresh snow and not stress-induced whiteness.

After dinner, we would relax in the lounge and amuse ourselves with witty repartee.

Grant and Don tried night skiing this year which was a real blast.

Turning thirteen this year has
made Grant a stronger and better snowboarder.

One downside of puberty, however, is that his sunny disposition would occasionally cloud over for a moment.

Thankfully, though, he would quickly revert to his typical
angelic behavior.

A friendly fellow bar patron snapped a shot of us mid-lunch.

Sooz is enjoying a "Sound
of Music
" moment.

The local haflingers were a source of daily amusement for Sooz. No riding, though.

One of Sooz's highlights is the steaming mug of glühwein at the end of a long day on the slopes.

Grant's not quite ready for the mulled wine just yet; he stuck
to the hot chocolate.

To complete the liquid phase
of the webpage, here's Don
with his obligitory weissbeer.

Our hotel, the Edelweiss & Gurgl. It's the big daddy of hotels on the slopes, been there over 115 years.

Sausage, stuffed with cheese, wrapped in bacon, and served
with fries. Don't worry though:
my cholesterol is under 200. Thanks for your concern.

The hotel was decorated beautifully on Christmas.

We all scrubbed up for the festive (and delicious) Christmas dinner.

Sooz and Grant sometimes would sled in the afternoon. Thankfully, nobody was badly hurt.

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. Here's a last shot of the beauty of Obergurgl.

Orange sky at night

As a treat, here's a panoramic photo looking over Obergurgl; we were literally above the clouds!
