Visited in Cancun by Wilma

For our October break, we decided to do something different and go back to North America. We went with our good friends the Snooks (Jon, Anette, Julia, and Toby) to a beautiful villa on Tankah Bay near Akumal, about an hour south of Cancun. Our first few days were idyllic and we enjoyed swimming, snorkeling, beachcombing, card games, and a cool beverage or two.

However, after a few days, it became apparent that a storm was brewing in the Atlantic. And of course, it quickly became the strongest hurricane ever recorded and then, naturally, it headed straight for us!

Because of the shortness of our holiday, and the time spent fleeing the storm, there are fewer photos for your enjoyment, please accept our apologies. Click on one to see it in full-size, and click again to come back to this page.

Here's our house from the beach,
the Villa Iguana.

Don and Sooz amused them- selves in the sea kayak.

Grant and Sooz spent time beachcombing; there were lots
of goodies to be found!

Ping-pong was as strenuous as it
got for us.  The team of Toby and Grant were a good match for Jon.

Our house came with a cook,
José, who prepared a number of delicious meals for us!

Here's the Snook family enjoying
the pool- we had all kinds of water to play in. Perhaps a bit too much water, as you will see...

Anette and Sooz went far and
wide in their search for shells.

Here's a sampling of their bounty!

Julia found a very pretty shell- almost as pretty as she is!

Grant and Sooz passed the time beachside by experimenting
with new hairstyles.

Here's the happy group, minus your cameraman, but with
local pooch.

A first sign of trouble is when
your neighbors start sandbagging and taping up their windows.
Quicktime movie

That evening, the sky became ominous and waves began to rise. Clicking on this photo should provide a little movie of the bay.

Jon was not bothered by the impending storm. A few Mexican beers will do that for you.

The next morning was eerily calm, although you could see
how the beach had eroded
15 feet already!

Our drive out of the area was not too bad, except for one flooded spot. Sorry for the quality but I was too busy evacuating!

Cancun airport seemed pretty calm, considering. Heathrow in July looks a lot worse than this.

With a bit of luck, we managed to get out on AA's last flight from Cancun before the airport closed. Phew!

Orange sky at night

As a treat, here's a panoramic photo of the sunset on our last evening. It was beautiful but scary!
