Cruising the French Canals

We wanted our summer holiday this year to be in France, so Grant could practice his language skills. As an aside, we also thought we could eat lots of great food and drink lots of French wine! So, after a bit of investigating, we decided to take a barge through the waterways of the Alsace-Lorraine region. We shared our boat with two other families, and then spent a few extra days in Strasbourg. As usual, we had a great time and photos are provided for your enjoyment.

Here's our ship, the Lorraine.
She was built in 1926.

Sooz took advantage of the
tow paths to cycle away the
calories of the day's meals. Not,
of course, that she needed it!

We visited a show of birds of prey, and this vulture was our favourite.

Ironic that Grant saw his first
Bald Eagle in France!

We visited the impossibly picturesque town of Colmar.

Haut-Koenigsbourg castle, overlooking the Rhine below.

Besides the eagles, we saw storks everywhere. They are the symbol
of Lorraine, and to have a nest
brings good luck.

The boys played boule in the evenings.

The Lorraine moored at night. It
was very hot the first few days so
we had to drink a lot to cool down.

Sooz was fairly satisfied with the daily selections of wine.

Back on the water, we passed the capital of the European Parliment in Strasbourg.

And then out of the city, onto the idyllic towpaths.

We lingered in the town of Saverne, here's the lock in the city centre.

The peaceful French country-
side
floated lazily by.

This is the Arzviller barge lift. It replaced 17 locks and simply scoops up our boat and lifts it 150 meters uphill in 10 minutes. Cool!

Here's the gang relaxing on
deck at one of the locks.

We visited a crystal workshop
 and Grant tried his hand
at engraving.

Marc Chagall created an amazing stained glass window for the
chapel in Sarrebourg.

Our capitan, Jermain.

Sooz approaching the village of Xouaxange. A nice place, and an excellent Scrabble word!

We went through one tunnel which was 2 kilometers long- most tunnels I know go under the water!

Looking down at the village of Waltenheim. Can you spot our ship?

Don with his obligatory
pint
of the local brew.

Here's all of us on our last
night on the Lorraine.

Don got a jazzy haircut in
Strasbourg the next day.
That's him on the right.

We rented bikes in Strasbourg,
 too. More cars to worry
about though.

Sooz in the Musée Alsacein which was much more interesting than
one would have thought.

We went to the top of the Strasbourg Cathedral. It was the tallest building in the world for 450 years, and we believed that after climbing up!!

The interior of the cathedral, absolutely stunning.

Sooz and Don enjoying an
alfresco meal. Note Sooz's
racy boutique purchase.

We took a day trip to Nancy; Stanislas square had just been
spiffed up for the Tour de France and it was spectacular.

The shopping in Nancy
was excellent, at least for
women's shoes!

The colourful family in Nancy.

Shopping in Strasbourg
wasn't that bad either!

Our last night, enjoying a tarte flambée in a pretty square.

We finish with an exterior of
the cathedral in Strasbourg- some call it the "Chrysler Building
of Cathedrals"!
