Visit to Tallinn

We decided to avoid hurricanes this October and stay in more temperate climes for this October's break. While Grant joined a school trip to Romania, Sooz and Don visited another Baltic state, this time Estonia, and its capital, Tallinn.

The center of Tallinn is an ancient walled city which is one of the best preserved anywhere in Europe. Of course, Estonia's recent history is just as interesting as its medieval tales. We had a great time exploring the city and culture during a time which was certainly off the tourist's peak.

As usual, to enjoy the photos, click on one to see it in full-size, and click again to come back to this page. Links are again provided for your interest and amusement.

The old center of the city is still ringed by its defensive walls and towers.

This tower is called 'Tall Herman' and it stands guard over the parliment building.

The highest part of the old town is called 'Toompea' and it has commanding views of the city and harbor beyond.

The Alexander Nevsky cathedral is on Toompea; it is the main Russian Orthodox church of the city.

There were little nooks and crannies (and church spires) everywhere you looked!

This section of the old wall is called the 'Knitting Wall' because of the many stalls selling Sooz local products.

The old wall also served as a convienent sheltering spot for tourists.

This tower is 'Kiek in de Kök'; literally 'peep in the kitchen'. The link tells you why.

A great view from the top; if you look closely you'll see a visitor has joined us!

A contrast to the grandeur of the tall towers is the defensive bulwark of 'Fat Margaret'.

Speaking of bulwarks, here's Don with his favourite door!

We visited the surprisingly entertaining Tallinn City Museum.

At the Museum of the Occupation, doors from various Soviet prisons were displayed.

On a happier note, we visited the site of the world-famous Estonian Song Festival.

Sooz found a store that catered perfectly to her fashion sensibilities!

Back in the old town, Sooz sallies forth from our hotel.

A short bus ride out of town was Kadriorg Palace, the summer home of Peter the Great, and now the Estonian Art Museum.

A composite photo of the Palace's Festive Hall, it was magnificent.

It was great fun to roam around the city at night.

Our hotel bar served drinks in glasses made of ice. The idea is to drink quick!

I've heard of beer goggles before, but never pretzel eyes!

A cosy cappuccino to
end the day.

The town square at dusk.
Or was it 2AM?

Like Don's lager, our webpage is finished, we hope as enjoyably to you as was his beer!

Thanks for watching, folks! Click here to get back to the home page.
