The Garden Committee met today. We set the date for
the big parent recruitment dinner/work day. It will be Tuesday, March 29 from
4-6. We will start the event in the garden with some soil preparation and
nematode planting. We will then retire to the Science Lab for food (the
Committee is potlucking it) and discussion. We will have a sign up sheet for the
next work day, which will include a refreshment sign up sheet. Irene suggested
that we set the example of providing healthy
foods.
Other plans are that Pat will work with 10 of her students, along with Miguel and Donna to build bird houses during the week of March 28- April 1st. Claudia will begin rooting houseplant clippings with interested classes, with the idea of having plants ready for Mother's Day. Claudia will also begin planting tomato and chile plants inside with the first grade, since those plants seem to transplant well. Cold weather plants like lettuce and kale can be planted directly outside by classrooms and parents during workdays. We also discussed planting the Three Sisters (corn, beans and squash) in cold frames, so they might be able to grow larger than they have in the past before the schoolyear is out. We all agreed we need to figure out ways to keep our squash borer problems down. We set aside old seeds and marked new seeds to by next time. Irene and Donna found information on World Boxes. We need to have the information and an example of the box by our big meeting. We plan to meet again before the big meeting on Tuesday, March 8 at 3:00 in the Science Room. Claudia is looking for nematodes in Gardens Alive! It seems they are supposed to be good for fighting tomato pests. Looking further, it looked like trichogramma might be our insect of choice. It fights the corn borer beetle. Please check out the GardensAlive.com website. Irene says.... We can order these supplies, pay for them with our own money, and get reimbursed from the Campaign money (or the 21st Century money). This trichchogramma sounds like a fine insect. Do we order it when needed, like next summer? I'll order an earthbox so that we'll have it next meeting. Then we can decide how to present it to the parents. - and teachers. Spring is on the way!
