Slander and calumnyAs you might have gathered from the relatively
cheery tone of the last post, the air conditioning is fixed. We've been sternly
warned by the A/C guy (who worked until 9:30 pm after arriving late in the
evening on Thursday) that we need to have a plumber come out and run the
steam/condensation line out of the hot water heater up through the attic and
out, rather than down through the slab and out, as it is now. The copper piping
that was carrying condensation from both appliances is corroded, and it's just a
matter of time until it fails behind the hot water heater just as it failed
behind the A/C unit.
But for now it's Memorial Day weekend, we are
enjoying the renewed cooling, and trying to figure out what we're going to do
with the kids for three straight days. Like idiots we missed a chance to
entertain them this afternoon because we completely forgot about a birthday
party we'd been invited to for a one-year-old. We were distracted by out
morning activity, a luau behind the public library to celebrate the beginning of
their summer reading program. Hardly had we received our welcoming leis before
Cady Gray took a running tumble, planting the left side of her face firmly into
the pavement. She now looks like a burn victim. However, she gamely jumped on
the bouncy castle until a bunch of people showed up and the teenagers in charge
started rationing entry. We'll try the outdoor festivities again tomorrow, with
our church's annual Pentecost picnic after services.
Another mood-lifter was Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, which met my lowered expectations with primo Jack Sparrow hijinks, energetic Geoffrey Rush aaarrghing, and some excellent last-act sailing action. Gore Verbinski is deadly with the supposedly suspenseful talking scenes -- he stages every one like the lingering last words of a dying father to his long-lost son -- but he's so spritely with the Sparrow comedy that it's worth sitting through all that Waterworld-y exposition. Finally I'll request that you read Noel's excellent guide to avoiding bucket-kicking, "Checkmate, Grim Reaper! How to Cheat Death According to TV and the Movies." He also masterminded this week's popular Inventory of "11 Unexpected Disco Records." Combine that with his blog entry on the Lost season finale (169 comments and counting), and you have a great week for the Noelax (who speaks for the trees). And now for another installment of: Archer's ABC Words See this post for a brief explanation. Today's abbreviated edition: The Letter C.
