Plant Tips:
1)  If you really want the tank to look nice: READ, VISIT Newsgroups and ASK questions!

2)  Make sure it is the way YOU want the tank to look.  I have broken down several tanks in order to restart because it was not what I wanted

3)  Java fern and anubius are easy to grow and hard to kill (in almost any condition)

4)  Use distilled or RO water if possible (especially if your tap water is high in phosphates or hardness level) - this does not apply to East African tanks

5)  Plant heavy and trim appropriately

6)  Find a method (water changes, fertilizing, maintance, and feeding) that works for you and stick to it. I mix mysis, bloodworms, and flake food in a bowl and place the mixture in ice trays. This allows easy feeding of all my tanks.

7)  Beauty does not happen overnight - give it some time

8)  Algae is a plant, but too much is a nuisance. I recommend some duckweed to help control nutrients in the water and it is a quick indicator or what's happening in your tank.

9)  Buy plants from good stores.  I like Aquatek and Amazonia (both in Austin), and I have found nice common plants (like crypts and swords) at Petco and Petsmart. I can also recommend AquaBotanic.

10)  Keep reading (go to the library) and introduce someone else to the hobby

11)  Planting tools are useful if you are doing a very thick and precise display
