Early Winter Blahs

Terry reminded me that I hadn't check in here in a while, so I'm firing off a post while I proctor a History 17 final here at Columbia College.

Work has been really intrusive to the rest of my life lately and my regular jamming buddies are gearing up for annual holiday musical engagements. So the playing has definitely taken a necessary, but unwelcome, backseat to the rest of my life. That should change after this week as committments are finished and the holidays approach.

To top it off I have had one cold after another for the last two months. I am not a pretty sight right now. Stressed and red-nosed like Rudolph in a methadone clinic with an expired prescription.

On the bright side, this cold will end (unless it kills me, heh), I'll be going into rehearsals for SuperGrass next week, and I've been in regular communication with Gary Vessel about my mandolin.

Points (faux tortoise) and fret inlay (ala a 1905 Gibson A-3) have been chosen. The top has been resawn and will be ready for carving soon. Cool story: it's going to be a "one piece with wings" as they say in violin luthiery. This means that the top will be large enough to not have a center seam. It will instead have a small "wing" on the treble side that will cover the lap point and a small portion of the adjacent top. I'll bet that would look cool in a light sunburst; I'm almost sorry it'll be a blackface.

As for SuperGrass, we've picked the tunes and shared mp3s. So it's just a matter of working out the arrangements and getting the sound tight. Jim Pate is a wonderful bass player and I'm pretty good at rhythm, so that second part shouldn't be a problem.

I guess the upshot here is, I'm looking forward to getting through the rest of the year!

Be well all,
Daniel
