Luthiery

My friend and co-worker, Bill, just finished building his first mandolin. Amazing. Now I have an idea about what non-musicians must feel when they listen to me sing and play.

My woodworking skills peaked in junior high school when I built a large serving tray and a skateboard deck. Carving the top (including the scroll), carvng the back, bending the sides, carving the neck and the headstock, finishing the wood, and making the nut are 10 times more intricate skills than the skills I attempted as a teenager.

Luthiery is another one of those hobbies that requires attention, time, and concetration equal to what one does for a living. For this reason it is every bit as much a stress reducer as playing music.

But Bill's a great player too! That guy probably never watches TV!
