Damn those naps
We're all set to go out and enjoy the sunshine
when my 2 year old D. grabs his blankie and his lambie and says, "mama. I'd
rather go to nap." He went straight into his room and went straight to
sleep.
(why we can't call them
"blanket" and "Lamb" like normal adults would is beyond me. Since day one, they
have been "Blankie and Lambie" and he can't sleep without
them.)
So, I'll write about profound,
philosophical, political issues instead of playing in the grass with my darling
children.
I went to my first
"pro-choice" political meeting last night. I've never been to one before.
Abortion just hasn't been my issue. But a friend asked me to go, so I thought
"why not? I'll see what it is all
about."
The first thing that shocked me
was that I hardly heard the word "abortion." What I heard in all the speeches
and discussions were how we must make birth control available to all women -
regardless of economic status - in order to prevent unwanted pregnancies.
Pretty much the whole meeting was about
that.
The second thing that shocked me
was hearing Tammy Baldwin speak about all the bills that have been introduced in
Congress to restrict access to birth control. I had no idea. I must do more
reading. (And as an aside, Tammy Baldwin rocks. I can't even imagine being a
non-hetrosexual woman in today's US Congress. I wonder how many times a day
some idiot says something completely insulting to her within the walls of the US
Capitol.)
The third thing that shocked
me was all the female OB GYNs who were there. And the stories they told about
helping poor women get access to birth control. Evidently, it ain't easy. It
was nice to see the doctor who delivered my first child. I haven't seen her for
years.
I guess I was expecting a group
of leftist radicals plotting to make abortion free and easy for everyone.
Instead, it was a group of women just like me - mostly mothers - who just want
to make sure that our daughters never have to deal with an unwanted pregnancy.
ever.
