Ashley Joan and Brooklyn "Peanut" Johnston Doug Johnston, his lovely wife, Shayni, and sisters, Jennifer and Brooklyn, welcomed little Ashley Joan to the world on January 13th. Mom, Dad and big sisters are thrilled with their little bundle of joy. A lot has changed for the Johnstons over the last six months. After over twenty years in San Diego, Doug moved the family an hour north to San Jacinto in September. He also hung up his bass and retired from rock n’ roll, leaving his band, Sledd, after six years and two CDs. He’s still working at the San Diego Zoo, where he is the Night Operations manager. When not at work, Doug spends most of his time shuttling back and forth to Home Depot, getting the new place into shape.
Michelle Crawford-Kocurek writes: My husband and I took the boys to Hawaii for spring break in March of last year. They had a great time seeing the volcanoes on the Big Island and on Maui. The picture was taken on Haleakala in Maui. The part of the trip my kids remember the most were the two whale watching trips we went on. They thought that was the coolest thing they have ever done. We were able to get pretty close to the whales. We even saw several mother whales teaching their new borns to breech in the water. The boys also loved playing in the ocean waves and swimming in the hotel pool, but, I think body surfing came in second to the whale watching. Overall it was a pretty cool trip. My boys’ names are Alex (12), Wesley (9) and Zachary (5). |
Yana and Joe Burwell After a year of perhaps the longest distance relationship ever, Joe and Yana were married last summer in Las Vegas in a small ceremony surrounded by family and friends. They met during Joe’s trip to St. Petersburg, Russia in March of 2001. They kept in touch via phone, internet and very occasional visits for much of the next year. Yana hails from Tula, a charming city of 545,000 that lies 2 hours south of St. Petersburg. It was founded in the 12th century. She was in college when they met. Yana emigrated to the U.S. last May, stopping in Seattle to meet Joe’s family. They were married six weeks later. After the honeymoon, they returned to Austin, TX, where Joe is a patent attorney in private practice. Joe and Yana are building a home in west Austin (not from
Michele Aslan’s!)
and plan to move in this fall. They’re looking forward to seeing
everyone at the Tucson Reunion.
