The devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina caused great difficulties for many, including some for our own Danny Gauthier and Aly Hakam

Danny lives in Ponchatoula, which is about thirty miles northeast of New Orleans.  While his house was lightly damaged by the storm, he was able to get it fixed within a few weeks.

Aly lives in Mandeville, LA, which is just north of Lake Pontchartrain.  He works for Chevron, ensuring that the environment is protected when old drilling platforms are dismantled.  He’s the “green” guy.

Aly was out in the Gulf on a platform when they saw hurricane Katrina coming.  He called home and had his wife get everything packed.  Aly met his wife and they drove to his parents’ home in Houston.

They stayed there for a few weeks before venturing back home.  To their immense relief, their house was not damaged, though the homes of several of their neighbors were.  They were able to move back in shortly after.

Unfortunately, several of Chevron’s offshore oil rigs were damaged, greatly increasing the need for environmental assessments.  As a consequence, Aly’s had to spend much of the last several weeks at Chevron locations throughout Texas, Louisiana and the Gulf.

Baksheesh

This month the Golden Ghutra is passed to Basil Abu-Hamayel and Robin Van Der Zee-Sego, who generously pitched in to fund this newsletter.  Shukron!
