Press

E-mail me with your questions, comments and critiques.

Thanks to our own Derek Dingle and DC Comics' Martha Thomases, when Milestone launched we received coverage in hundreds of newspapers, magazines and TV programs. In mid-1993, office manager Christine Gilliam did up a list for a press release. That list follows. Afterwards, there were dozens more magazine and newspaper stories and a lot more TV but I’m not even going to try and reconstruct it all. If you want to skip the list and go straight back to my commentary, click here. By the way, the pictures on this page are all cover stories.

When I look at all this, I’m saddened to remember that in many of the cities where we received press coverage, we couldn’t get local comic book stores to carry our products. Equally ironic is that Milestone received a lot more attention in general media outlets than we ever did in the comic book trade press. I’ve been covered in the New York Times more often than I’ve been covered in Wizard (5 and 1 times, respectively) I’ve been in The Washington Post more times than I’ve been in The Comics Journal (3 and 1 times, respectively. In the Journal’s case, I suppose I should count my blessings). When Milestone, or "Black Comics" are covered in the trade press, it’s always as a group.

There’s never been a solo interview of any Milestone staffer or freelancer in the trade press. On the other hand, Denys Cowan, John Rozum, Ivan Velez, myself and others have had solo interviews on TV and in newspapers and magazines many times each.

There’s never been a story about any individual Milestone title in the trade press. I’ve had solo stories done on almost every non-Milestone book I’ve written in my career, DAMAGE CONTROL, DEATHLOK, SHE-HULK, CAPTAIN MARVEL, both editions of PRINCE, BACK TO THE FUTURE, ULTRAMAN, MONSTER IN MY POCKET, X-O MANOWAR, et cetera, et cetera. But ICON, for instance, has never had a story devoted to it in the fan press. Not even the year it was nominated for three Eisner awards (best ongoing series, best editor, best writer). What do we have to do to get some play?
