Dwayne's Readers Recommend

A few weeks ago, I bemoaned the fact that I so rarely actually write about the content of comics. Embarrassing, really, considering that this is supposed to be a column about comics. My solution? Ask you, my faithless minions, to give me a recommended reading list of your favorite comic books. This being a graphic novel-oriented site, I limited entries accordingly, while also accepting compilations in book form, just so I could write off some super-hero comics. I also made vague promises of some sort of prize to the reader who suggested the book I liked the most from this list. You guys really came through for me, suggesting hundreds of titles. And though I'm honored by your diligence, frankly, the prize isn't going to be that nice.

Anyway, when I do write the column about my final buy list, it won't include any of the books I already own. This week, I'll present a list of the books you suggested that I won't be buying, mostly because I already have them. I suggest that you guys listen to each other and do some buying of your own; you've got excellent taste (for the most part). My comments, if any, follow in italics.

A Partial List of Dwayne's "Gottem's"

100 Bullets: First Shot, Last Call
At this year's San Diego Con, a sharp-eyed retailer (I'm sorry I don't remember who) looked at my purchases and told me if I liked all those, I'd like this one. He was right. There's a lesson there for other retailers, especially the ones who prefer to critique their customers' purchases rather than encouraging them to buy more. If I want to be treated like that, I'll go to a record store.

A Family Matter by Will Eisner any Will Eisner, you suggested pretty much everything he's ever done. I'm a big fan and I already own it all, except for the Spirit stuff. I just can't get past Ebony White. Still, it's important stuff and your mileage may vary.

The Authority
Warren Ellis has, in addition to the best comic book discussion site on the entire web, an awful lot of fans. This is the only thing of his I've read that was suggested, so far. If you guys have your way, that'll be changing in short order. Yes, Reggie, I am going to read Planetary.

The Avengers: The Kree-Skrull War

Astro City
And Marvels and Avengers. Kurt Busiek's good works are legion.

Astronauts in Trouble: Live from the Moon
Heinlein-esque science fiction. Also Astronauts in Trouble: Space: 1959. Just go get them.

The Adventures of Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot

Bone by Jeff Smith

Cerebus
Terrific comics, even at its most self-involved its worthy of your time. When it's on its game, there's nothing better.

Channel Zero by Brian Wood

Concrete
This is another "collect them all" entry.

Death: The High Cost Of Living

Fortune and Glory
This autobiographical comic about hot comic creator Brian Michael Bendis' adventures in Hollywood cracked me up. It could be an account of my own Hollywood adventures, except for the eventual success part.

From Hell
Or anything else by Alan Moore. For my money, he's still the best writer in the field, bar none. I actually pay 25-30 bucks for those 6-8 issue ABC compilations. They're actually worth it!

The Golden Age

Greenberg the Vampire
My all-time favorite Marvel Graphic Novel. Portnoy's Complaint meets Dracula. No, really.

Hitman

Leave It to Chance

JLA: American Dreams

The Life Story of the Flash

Lone Wolf & Cub

Mage
And I'll read the sequel, too. If I ever figure out which ones I don't already have.

Maus

Palestine
I'm doing a whole column on this one pretty soon.

Preacher: Gone to Texas

Any of Neil Gaiman's Sandman collections
Like I've got anything to add.

Safe Area Gorazde

Starman
I, too, want to know how it all turns out.

Superman: Peace on Earth
Another future column. These Dini/Ross collaborations are treasures.

Understanding Comics
Mandatory.

Wolff & Byrd, Counselors of the Macabre
Now it's called Supernatural Law, but a rose by any other name…

Why I Hate Saturn
You must own everything by Kyle Baker, don't make me come over there.

Okay, that's it for now. I'll get back to this over the next few weeks.

Update: The Dreaded "Odds and Ends" Curse
As I've mentioned, on the two previous occasions I wrote a column called "Odds and Ends," the site I was writing for folded immediately thereafter. Last week's "Odds and Ends" column only managed to crash Psycomic for a week. Progress. Rejoice!

Dwayne McDuffie, is the co-creator of Icon, Static Shock and Damage Control. It's too late to get your overpriced Milestone tee-shirts, mugs and mouse pads from the Milestone Comics on-line store delivered by Christmas. So screw the gifts, get them for yourself. Dwayne wants you to visit his web site; he only needs a couple hundred hits to break 10,000 before the end of the year.
