Sukeban Deka and its influence on Go Go

Time Code: 01:17:16
Information: Go Go and her weapon

One of the nice things about doing a publicity event at Powell's Books on behalf of the book is that I got a valuable tip about one source Tarantino drew upon for the film, in this case from a reader named Willy Greer.

Afterwards a reader came up and told me about a Japanese TV show called Sukeban Deka and its influence on the look and weaponry of Go Go Yubari.

"Sukeban" is the Japanese word for a high school age delinquent or "bad girl." According to one fan site , which I have cannibalized for this listing, "The girls in the series were extraordinary high school students with exceptional skills that were recruited by a secret government agency to perform covert operations, usually where initial deception was an advantage (after all, who would suspect a high school girl to be a government agent?). The leader's main weapon was a metal yoyo on a chain that a well-trained agent could use to devastating effect." Sukeban Deka was one of the most popular TV shows in Japan . Broadcast over the equivalent of three seasons and 89 episodes, the series chronicled the adventures of Saki Asamiya, whose persona was adopted by three successive high school girls as the previous incarnation retired from secret service, not unlike Dr. Who. There is also an anime version of the series.

The girls wear sailor style school girl uniforms, not unlike Go Go's, and use a weapon very much like the ball and chain that Go Go uses, which is usually said to be inspired by Master of the Flying Guillotine.
