Desire to Make a Difference In 1994, 68 percent of high-school students and 73 percent of college students performed some type of volunteer work. (Jimmy Long)
I strongly believe that it is important for all individuals to be able to give back to the communities in which they belong to.
A rising share of high school seniors say "making a contribution to society" is "extremely" or "quite" important, while a declining share (though still a majority) say the same for "having lots of money." (Howe and Strauss, Millennials Rising)
Even though McMaster University has so many people, and so many people groups, it is still hard to find yourself as a part of a community. (Open Circle particpant)
Spiritual Searching Outside of Organized Religion Of teenagers, only 10% say that they place a high value on religious involvement while 60% explicitly acknowledge that they have spiritual needs. (Reginald Bibby)
Growing up my experience with religion taught me that religion was not a place where my ideas were needed; other people had already figured out the "right answers" and I was meant to memorize and abide by them if I had any desire of being a good person. ... I discovered that it was not God who I did not believe in, it was others' concepts of God that kept me from creating a relationship with God.
Discussing spirituality, its different forms and how it affects my life, has always been a passion of mine. I usually find it difficult to find others with this similar interest, but Open Circles introduced me to a group of people who feel the same as I do. (Open Circle particpant)
I was raised without any concept of God but now I believe in God this much [index finger and thumb held about an inch apart]. I don't even know why. I just do. But I've never stepped foot in a church. It's too scary. (Open Circle participant)
