GUANGZHOU - 5.19.04 - A Blessing, A Beating, And A Chinese Haircut

fu-manchu yogurt face.
this was a day that we had no paperwork or government work to do, but it turned out to be one of the most

eventful of the trip. sightseeing in the morning, another day another temple. this one is called Liu Rong Temple, which means six banyan trees.

jill and i went to the top, but were not rewarded with a squirrel card.

these buddhas represent past, present and future.

now wouldn't your image of a monk to bless the babies seem to be an old guy with a long beard and a walking stick? our babies were blessed by this young fellow.
afterwards he comes up to me and says "uhh hey padre, how bout a little something for the effort?"
to which i replied, "gunga, er no, UNGA GUN GALUNGA" which means on his deathbed he will have total consciousness, so he's got that goin' for him. no actually it cost a donation of 10RMB ($1.25 U.S.) and he didn't ask, nor would he.

two families were absent today, so i think i can do this (l-r) vicky and lucy, rich and katherine, karen and katy, jill and lucy.

five rams statue, the legend is guangzhou was dying and out of food and some sisters brought five goats to the city which saved it. guangzhou is known as the city of five goats.
next we went to the toy wholesaler where we found the source of all the cheezy plastic carnival prizes in the world.
jill did buy some biros, and we got a toy for someone i can't mention. but we were quickly bored and went out to the surrounding market place which seemed to be devoted to goods used to pack the toys inside the mall of to the four corners of the world. rubber-bands, plastic wrap, boxes, and whatnot.

rubber-band and plastic selection

all of the sudden, like a shot, one man comes running chased buy another whose shouts brought other men out of the shops and what i'm assuming was a shoplifter was apprehended and dealt with. jill, ever the news woman was right on the scene. (live, local, latebreaking!)

my video footage is from a safer distance, but in my defense i did have lucy.
it was very exciting, all the sudden this marketplace, that was kind of dead (it was lunchtime) exploded with a ferocious energy saved usually for soccer riots, or WWF matches. after his beating. he was given ice for his bruises.

as inspector clousseau used to say "it's all part of life's rich pageant"
jill being the only white woman there, began to feel the gazes upon her and quickly retreated.

these two buildings (directly across from each other) show the variety of living conditions in one area.

we decided to duck down another alley to see what other trouble we could find and this turned in to be a food market, the safe stuff was out by the street.

cooked goose, dried fish.

but as we walked further in the stalls got more exotic.
tubs of live toads, scorpions, and eels.

this man, apparently unaware of the provincial forestry division's recent ruling is quite proud of his snake selection.

as was this man of his kitty selection.
jill asked me "he is selling those for pets? isn't he?" to which i replied, "yes dear, pet's. that's it. cuddly yummy, er...i mean fuzzy pets."
luckily for you the camera's batteries went dead and we decided to turn around before we got to the jellied brained monkey heads.

lucy and jill take their naps at the same time in the late afternoon but lucy insists on her's being mobile, so we usually go out for a late afternoon walk and coke light.
the above was taken at the school where these dancers were practicing for an upcoming event, or recital or something.
lucy now awake we decided daddy needed a haircut, so i ducked into the youth hostel which had a barber (she looked like an asian young loretta camper, a jordan neighbor in galesburg) and she set off on my hair.

she cut with scissors, then a razor, then thinning shears, then washed and dried me, then scissors again and razor again, it was the most thorough going over my hair had ever had. it took over a half an hour and lucy sat patiently (she's laughing in the above shot) chewing gum that i couldn't convince the lady not to give her.
the haircut cost 50RMB, which is just over six dollars, but i gave her a hundred because i liked the results so much.

for dinner we went back to the vietnamese place that jill and i have decided, serves the best food we've had on the trip. they do things with soft-shelled crab that are absolutely pornographic. taste-wise.
everything they serve has a great depth of flavor of unique tastes.
big day, sorry not too many lucy photos.
today we have the visa ceremony at the american consulate, and a boat trip for tonight.
tomorrow we go back to hong kong by rail and fly home the following day.
almost done!
