Olivia Dow - Giants of Xlendi Bay
The most spectacular, action-packed show yet!

Olivia Dow - Giants of Xlendi Bay

The curtain rises to welcome Olivia Dow’s 6th Original Maltese Ballet at the Mediterranean Conference Centre on Saturday 4th August 2001 at 7.30pm. which promises to be the most powerful performance so far.

Over 80 of Olivia Dow’s students, many of them now in an advanced stage of their studies -en pointe- will fill the stage with their unusual precise routines, their dazzling costumes which, this year, are the most expensive they ever had, their fiery spirit as they dance into our hearts as always! They get better every year and Olivia says that she has no doubt that Giants of Xlendi Bay will be another resounding success for her students. ‘All the patrons seated at the MCC are in for a special treat!’

The Giants’ role is played by 9 of Olivia’s tallest in the school. They have vast experience in the theatre and TV as they have been now dancing for the last seven years. The ‘ability’ of the teacher is reflected in the ‘quality’ of the dancers she is coaching and Olivia is utterly pleased with all of them.

‘Giants of Xlendi Bay is a fictitious story by John Baldacchino, a tale with some truth in it which can sometimes be stranger than fiction! Twelve thousand years ago, 10-foot Giants roamed the earth, having first landed from another planet on a huge island which they called Goshawk, after a large short-winged hawk which migrated there. The music by Joe Brown is tremendous.
The island of Goshawk prospered under the Regime of these Giants who were called ‘Gosmonauts’; these temples were built and still stand today, proof of a highly motivated civilization. These temples, the most famous those of Ggantija, stand proud in their majestic beauty and worldly significance, the oldest on earth!

Unfortunately, in those days, the oxygen level could not very well sustain the Giants, so they evolved into smaller beings. These genetically-modified humans expanded their race to the four corners of the world and grew to many great and powerful nations.

Marama Corlett as Princess Petrouxka

On one occasion, as the story goes, ruthless pirates from the North, not unlike the Vikings, possibly their ancestors, not realizing that the people on Goshawk invaded the island only to find that the Ozonetecs, as they were called, could not be conquered. Under the care of the ruling Princesses, highly trained in ‘unarmed combat technique’ who were known as the elite Spider Warriors, the invaders were thrown back in an overwhelming defeat. The leader of this gang of pirates who was called Russ fell in love with the eldest of the Princesses Petrouxka and the history of the world took a turn for the better. Two of his generals, Den and Holl married Petrouxka’s co-rulers Talja and Ranza and together went out to discover more mystical lands. Russ (played by Russian dancer Ivan Porochine, soloist with the Opera and Ballet Company in Perm, Russia) married Petrouxka (played by Marama Corlett) and ruled the island of Goshawk in peace. And for thousands of years, there was no more cruelty, no piracy and pain, only love and understanding. A huge prosperous country was even named after the great discoverer Russ!

Since then, thousands upon thousands of promises have been broken and the world is in turmoil again, but the Giants of Xlendi Bay have promised that they will return, in the new Millennium, to ensure that the ‘Unification of Mankind’ will no longer remain a dream, but a long lasting reality. Ranza is played by lovely Adonia Sammut and Talja by up-and-coming Althea Corlett, Marama’s sister. and Brendan Borg as Den. Aeroflot - Russian Airlines were kind enough to sponsor Ivan Porochine’s return flight Moscow - Malta - Moscow. Ivan will be staying as a guest at the Coastline Hotel.
