Contemporary Autistic Biographies
This page contains a listing of English-language biographies of people on the autistic spectrum – publishing dates 1964-2005. These biographies were used in the author’s research on the extremes of autism.
This list is in alphabetical order by the name of the person who the biography or autobiography describes. It includes English-language books with significant biographical material about the autistic experience, limited to books published by the end of 2005. It only contains books in which the person is identified as being on the autistic spectrum within the book, and only books about one person with autism or one family, but not collections of stories. In some of the books, the author’s intent may be focused on autism but also on wanting to convey non-biographical information, such as advocating a treatment method. These materials are listed if they include a large amount of biographical material. These criteria have been applied broadly.
Some people on the autistic spectrum write poetry of an autobiographical nature, but these typically don’t have many biographical details and may be cryptic as to what they are describing. Therefore, without other more biographical books to compliment their poetry, this list does not include the works of Jennifer Fan (Cinderella with Wrong Shoes, 2001), Lincoln Grigsby (The Light Within, 2001), William Julien (Carrousels and Storms, 1999), Craig Romkema (Embracing the Sky, 2002), Michael O’Reilly (And Love Was All He Said – Growing Up Autistic, 2000), Chammi Rajapatirana (The Vial, 1999), or Starfire M. L. Soledad (Spectrums, 2003). Similarly, some people with autism are known through their art, such as Jonathan Lerman, Peter Myers and Stephen Wiltshire, and they are not listed.
This list does not include works by people with autism written on other subjects, such as And Wake Me With The Morning Light (2003) by Nicky Mann in which she tells about her interactions with children with behavioral and emotional disorders. It also doesn’t include works by parents of those with autism if that work is not focused on autism. Excluded from this list for that reason is Special Children, Challenged Parents (1997) by Robert Naseef who writes ‘The process of grieving, coping and “going on with your life” is the focus of this book.’ Also excluded is Dancing with Dragons (1996) by Gerald Mialaret in which he writes “Even though our sixth child, Stephen Andrew, is a thirty year old man with the severe disability of autism, that particular disability is not central to the book.”
The most difficult aspect in deciding what to include in this list was in deciding when a book had too little biographical material for inclusion, based on the stated selection criteria. There are some books, having been written by people with autism, and addressing the topic of autism, which contain only a small amount of autobiographical material, or are written in general terms. For these reasons, excluded from this list are Jasmine Lee O’Neill (Through the Eyes of Aliens, 1999), Marc Segar (Coping: A Survival Guide for People with Asperger Syndrome, 1997), and William Stillman (Demystifying the Autistic Experience , 2003). There are also books on autism by parents which use only a small amount of biographical material about their autistic children. Among those excluded for this reason are The Autism Sourcebook (2005) by Karen Siff Exkorn, Learning to Live with High Functioning Autism (2000) by Mike Stanton, and Autism – The Eighth Colour of the Rainbow (2004) by Florica Stone.
Lastly, though I was very fortunate in tracking down these books, sometimes with private publishing or title changes, and I’ve attempted to be very thorough, there were two books that I believe might be appropriate which aren’t listed. One is Autism: A Personal Account written by Therese Jolliffe about herself, but I have only been able to find it in the form of an article or as part of an anthology, though I’ve seen hints that it may have been published in the form of a book. The other is a book titled Lord, Why Not Me?: A Mother’s Story of an Autistic Child, which may have been written by Marean J. Price about her son Jeremy, but I have been unable to locate a copy to confirm that it was published. For each of the materials listed below, I was able to confirm its existence by purchasing a copy or borrowing a copy from a library. There are 133 people listed, and 152 books.
