Epilogue (1993)
Acting as a closure to the Walled City Trilogy, Epilogue contemplates what the future of the prison system holds, using letters and walking dead as a point of departure. Scored for hidden soprano, hidden orchestral chimes, and the donnamatrix (a system designed and built by the composer for spatially locating sound at any one or all of 20 speakers), Epilogue serves as an environment for thought. The soprano sings vowels in harmonic counterpoint with the chimes, both located outside of the performance area. The 20 speakers are hidden underneath audience seats, all wiring and equipment concealed. Located through the speaker matrix is spoken voice, whispering phrases from the previous two pieces. It functions as a call to prevent crime rather than punish criminals.
