Amoskeag (1994)
A multimedia performance piece using large screen video projection, electronic music, and live performance, amoskeag tells the story of a mother and a daughter working in a cloth mill during the depression. A performer, acting as the daughter, continuously sews yards of pure white, finished cloth with a treadle-style sewing machine. A dialogue occurs between the daughter and the mother, who is part of the recorded audio tape. As the story unfolds, the large screen video projection shows an 18 hour time-lapse of the amoskeag factory, condensed to the 18 minute duration of the piece. The work discusses issues of women's rights and capitalism.
