I Want to Burn Again- revisited 2003
Well, for the first time in seven years I did not attend in 2002, but that's OK my Brothers Charles and Mike were there to represent "the Original SpaceVirgins". After a year break I was happy to return again in 2003. Like all good things "Nothing remains the Same" The annual event has grown from 3000 people the first year I attended to over 29,000 people in 2003. Of course it's different, bigger, more organized, it had to change to accommodate the growth. Hats off to the Larry and the many organizers who so far have remained committed to maintaining the Noncommercial aspect of this unique event. Of course it had to change, it requires far more organization and infrastructure to support a community of almost 30,000 than it took to get 3000 people to the same place. Yes, of course like all the e old timers, we miss the "good ol' days" of total anarchy, absolute chaos, and real life threatening danger, Gone are the days of the Drive By Shooting Range, Free Burns, massive Community Showers and access to the Hot springs.
But MY GOD... the Art, The Vehicles, the Theme camps, the Technology, the Lights, the Sounds. The wit remains !
It Grows and matures as an event, but every year the Black Rock first timers bring a new energy and enthusiasm, Hell, we all know its addictive.
In 1997 we started "SpaceVirgin" half as a whim, and half was serious attempt to create sacred space, over the next three years it grew until in 1999 we were on the Esplanade, had a great mix of people and well we partied like it was 1999! sadly in 2000 the weather sucked and the theme camp was never fully operational. We knew the spirit would continue on long after the original Co- Founders Charles, Mark, the Krall boys and myself would move on. In the new Millennium the new leaders and organizers approached the theme camp with a level of commitment and dedication unimaginable by the original scruffy founders, Many faces have changed, Souls have come and gone, but spirit of Community, Art and Public Service lives on.
So if your an old timer, a newbie or something in between, Within you burns the spirit of The Sacred Shrine of the Space Virgin so Burn ON.
