The One Another Way

Purpose: to understand God’s desire for sacrificial and loving relationships in His church.

John 13: 34 – 35 Jesus said this after washing his disciples’ feet. He even washed Judas’ feet despite knowing that Judas would later betray him.

Why did Jesus call the command to love one another a new command?

What does it mean to love as Jesus loved? What was different about the way Jesus loved people?

How would loving like Jesus loved make us different from just being “nice religious people?”

Luke 10:25 - 37

What does Jesus want us to do most?

Love God and love other people wholeheartedly.

What does it mean to love God with all your heart?

What does it mean to love your neighbor as yourself?

How does God feel about prejudice?

Jesus shows us in these verses that prejudice is ungodly. The Jews thought that they were better than the Samaritans. Making the Samaritan the good, loving neighbor would convict the expert in the law.

What kind of attitudes toward others will you need to change in order to love as Jesus loved?

Matthew 5: 43 – 48

The command to love our enemies removes all excuses for being unloving toward others. We all have people that we find difficult to love.

Who are the people who are the hardest for you to love?

Would you like to pray together about loving these people and also pray for them?

What did Jesus mean in verses 46 – 48? Often people will be loving toward others who will love them in return. Because the church is a close knit family there will be times when you may not feel loved by others, how does God expect you to respond when you are mistreated? To choose to be loving and work things out.
