Community of Christ
A Bible study regarding the disciple's need for other Christians as well as God's desire for us to develop deep, encouraging, and unified relationships. John 17:20 - 23 What was Jesus praying about in this passage? That all of his followers would be one, as Jesus and God are one. Why was this unity so important? To let the world know that God sent Jesus and that God loves each person as God loves Jesus. Is this unity possible? How? Let's look at a few other verses that will show us.
I Corinthians 12: 12 - 27 What does God want us to understand about His church? It is like our human body, in order to survive all our parts must function together in unity. According to verses 15 through 20 how important are you to the body of Christ? Very important! You have a role that no one else can fulfill. God wants you to participate fully. Someone worshiping in the congregation is just as important as the person giving the sermon. According to verses 21 through 26 how important should the body of Christ be to you? Very important! Each member needs all of the others. We are mutually dependent upon each other. We should value every member in the church. What do you think it means to suffer with those who suffer or rejoice with those who rejoice? Is it acceptable to God for you to not have close, loving relationships in the church, the body of Christ? How can you fulfill this expectation in your life?
Ephesians 4: 1 - 3; 25 - 5:2 What direction do these verses give us on how to be part of God's church? According to verses 1 through 4 how can we live a worthy life? Be humble, gentle, and patient. Bear with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit. Unity requires effort, it does not come naturally!
According to verses 25 through 5: 2 what are we to put off and put on in our lives?
Put off Put on Falsehood Truthful speech Sinful anger Don't let sun go down on your anger Stealing Work and share with others Unwholesome talk Encouraging talk Bitterness Kindness Rage & Anger Compassion Brawling Forgiveness Slander & Malice Imitate God as a dearly loved child Live a life of love
Which of these behaviors will be most difficult for you to put off or on? Are you willing to make every effort to live this way? Supplemental Scripture: Romans 12: 4 - 5 |
