Second automotive repair not performed by my father
21/June/2006 10:49 Filed in: Personal
My back tire was in bad, bad condition, so I took the
day off (or part of it anyway) to get my tire
replaced.
The culprit for the tire's bad condition is that the car is nor properly aligned! As a matter of fact my front wheel also was starting to show early indications of the back wheel's ailment.
So I dropped my car off, bright and early, at the goodyear repair shop down the road, and was given a two hour quote for things to be done.
It has been 2 hours and 20 minutes - still not done... argh!
My dad is an auto-mechanic, but he lives a bit far away - so having him look at the car is not viable at the moment (oy!)
Anyway - let's see the quality of work that comes out - I am optimistic

Movies to see
20/June/2006 16:33 Filed in: Entertainment
Saw some movies recently (some of them for the second
time), reviews might be forthcoming, but do see:
Pitch Dark (Riddick Rocks!)
Shawshank Redemption (Really did not expect it to end that way - I was pleasantly surprised)
Remember the Titans
Duma (this was awesome!
)
Fun with Dick and Jane (hilarious)
The Mummy
The Mummy Returns
X3
Stay Away From:
The Tesseract (well, OK, you can watch it, the plot did not seem to tie in - in my opinion of course)

Is the World Bank Evil?
20/June/2006 16:28 Filed in: School
So we picked a project for the team
presentation/research part of my Business Ethics
class (only 2.5 weeks to go! Both excited at the
prospect of getting done, and scared that we are not
further along! anyway...) The topic: the World Bank.
I was pretty impartial about it, it really did not
effect me, so I did not care much to investigate into
the matter in the past - all I heard is that "the
world bank is evil" - is it good, evil, or shades of
gray?
We will soon find out!
We will soon find out!

The Power to Crush other Kids
10/June/2006 10:03 Filed in: School
Even though I came across pretty hash on my last post
regarding the use of presentation technologies (such
as powerpoint) they do have a place and a use - the
trick is to know when and how to use them to make
your presentation very effective.
I recently came across this mock-add for macintosh computers: Macintosh: the power to crush other kids.
Sometimes when I bring my powerbook to class, and fireup Keynote - I feel like this
Have a look here

Powerpoint is not a Panacea
06/June/2006 10:53 Filed in: WTF?!
Even though this happened in class last night, I
think it goes well under the "What the fuck?!"
category.
I was in class last night, and we were discussing the presentation that each class member must do in two days.
The presentation is all but 5 minutes long (longer than that and you get cut off), and the professor left us to our own devices: Basically do what you want, so long as it is five minutes.
This was kind of cool, because we don't have to have any electronic visuals (vis-à-vis powerpoint), but some classmates revolted (well one in particular). It was not fathomable to him that we were NOT required to accompany our presentation with the standard, mind numbing, totally useless (and sometimes a not well thought) powerpoint slides! Some classmates who had their head on the right way said (and rightfully so) that PowerPoint is not required for a presentation of such small length.
This guy kept on harping about how it's an industry standard to do this, and if you go to boardrooms, and blah (dramatic pause) blah (another dramatic pause) blah....
Powerpoint is not a panacea, it is not required, and some of the best presentations that I have seen had no powerpoint.
It is a crutch, especially to MBA students, who do not feel comfortable in from of a crowd. MBA students should invest more time in public speaking courses and less time worrying about what they will do with their powerpoint presentation.
- Just my two cents

In Search of a Doctorate (Part Deux)
02/June/2006 08:57 Filed in: School
Once I was done with my BA in Computer Science, the
tech bubble was leaking air (if not deflated
completely!), and I felt a bit burned out from the
ultra theoreticalness of my BA experience.
When I was talking to one of my friends (whom I respect) who did her undergrad in Business Administration, she told me that an MBA would be a valuable tool, and she was pursuing it. For lack of a better choice, because it was free, and because my day-job was managerial in nature, I decided to become part of the MBA program.
Generally I did not respect most people with degrees in business educations, I perceived it to be a bunch of bullshit. I am nearly done with my MBA, and I still hold that view, with some modifications and amendments of course. There are many fellow students, and many faculty that I have met that make me appreciate the intellect that goes into business. I have also met many duds outside of academia indicate to me that a business education without a functioning brain has pretty bad consequences.
So now where does this leave me?
I am left asking myself "What Now?"
I want to learn more - things that might be useful in my work life and in my personal life.
This has lead me on a quest to find a doctorate that is good for me....
