Yurt Raising One - April 26-27, 2003

Despite the rain and with thanks to all of our helpers, we prepped the deck, lattice wall, the roof rafters and the roof ring of the yurt. We also enjoyed a dinner celebrating Dave's 38th birthday!

Nancy in an Inner Mongolian yurt in 1998. A premonition of good things to come?
Early siting work in April. Cinder blocks at 36 points make the foundation.
Leveling the cinderblocks across the yurt's 24' radius.
Roll it! Lattice prep on a sunny day.
Grimm, the legend, manages the project.
The yurt raising weekend! One crew worked on the platform's 18 modules.
Brian hammering it up! The modules, bolted together, will form a 24' circle.
Meanwhile, at the yurt site, a 2nd crew preps the yurts 42 rafters. We planed...
... and then we drilled holes at one end...
... and made notches at the other end for hooking into the tension cable.
We stained them...
... and watched them dry.
Later on, back at Paul and Joan's house, Liza...
...Anna and Dana helped to prep the feast!
Annadeene's cake art!
Adam and Rachel make yummy icecream.
Maime takes the cake!
Sunday: The roof ring will sit on top of the yurt to hold the rafters in place.
Lou and Darin drill holes for the rafters...
... it required precision drilling!
Dave cut 3" rods that will connect the rafter to the roof ring.
Hauling the modules from Paul and Joan's to the yurt site.
Lou and Lee starting to connect the lattice...
... Annadeene helps...
along with Felton, Maime, Brian and Dana.
The completed lattice is more than 75' long.
Everyone pitches in to tighten more than 600 bolts.
Adam and Rachel.
Maime holds the plan for the platform.
Each of the 18 modules are bolted into place.
Lou and Liza.
The bolts are underneath the platform.
WOW! The platform is finished!
The compressed lattice is put on the platform for installation on another day.
The incredible crew at dusk!
