Astronomy: A Beginner's Guide to the Universe
Despite the title, this book is beyond beginners. However, if you want an astronomy book with depth and breadth, this is a great one. Includes a CD

Practical Skywatching (Nature Companion Series)
I had seen this book a number of times in the book store, even paged through it and didn't think much of it. One day I saw it on sale for $4.95 and couldn't resist. I have no idea why I didn't buy it sooner. It's a hard cover book with extremely thick pages. It is loaded with sky charts and information. Has locations of objects and what you need to see them. Also had phonetic pronunciations for the constellation names. Highly recommended. You can pick them up new or used for a very good price. |

Turn Left at Orion

Although I haven't read this book personally, too many people have mentioned it not to include it as a great beginner's guide.

Another book by David Levy. Geared toward the newcomer and VERY inexpensive.

The Backyard Astronomer's Guide
This is the book that got me going and it's a great spot to begin. It's not very deep but covers a lot of topics. It even has it's own web site for updated information that can be found here: www.backyardastronomy.com

The Year-Round Messier Marathon Field Guide
If you want a guide to help you point out Messier objects, this one is the standard for which all are measured. Great for use with a Telrad.

The Fingerprint of God
Not directly astronomy related. Who made the Universe? This is a great book if you believe or want to believe in God and his word. As a Christian, I highly enjoyed this book and I believe Hugh Ross has another book out as well.

The Universe in a Nutshell
Not directly astronomy related. Easy to read and marvelously illustrated. Steven Hawking is a genius (well we knew that already). Truly something everybody should read if they want to know what's really around them.

A Brief History of Time
Not directly astronomy related. Reality is mind blowing. This book is tougher to read than "The Universe in a Nutshell" but fascinating. I read an older version of this book and I'm sure the newer prints are just that much better.

The New CCD Astronomy
If you are very serious about astrophotography and willing to spend big bucks, than you should take a look at this book. This book also has a web page, however most of the pages are locked unless you have purchased the book www.newastro.com Ron is working on a new book, "Photoshop for Astrophotographers" which I will undoubtedly be adding to this list when it comes out. |

Introduction to Digital Astrophotography
Here is a book for astrophotographers that is easy to read and covers all the topics. Not as deep as "The New CCD Astronomy" but highly recommended, especially for beginners or if you want to photograph the heavens without the budget reaching astronomical proportions.

Photoshop for Astrophotographers
Not to be confused with Ron Wodowski's not yet released book, this is actually a CD focused on the topic. I recently ordered this work and will be adding more information about it. The books home page can be found here. The author, Jerry Lodriguss has two books in the works, a book of astrophotos and another focused on Astrophotography with digital cameras, primarily DSLRs. |
