Software Tools

Caveat - The software below is identical to the software used in my orchestra classes, and is provided free of charge for individual (non-institutional) use. The programs were written for Apple Macintosh computers using RealBasic; no Windows versions are available. Computers being what they are, the programs may or may not work correctly on your machine. Please, no nasty E-mails or troubleshooting requests. Software is provided as is, and use it at your own risk. Free lunches have no tech. support departments.

MacMetronome - Metronome and multiple octave pitch generator for tuning orchestra instruments. Metronome can subdivide into 2,3, or 4 divisions. Button and displays are extra large to accommodate classroom settings. Mac OS X.

Note Reader - Note reading software with a twist. Instead of reciting letter names, students must show the position of each note on a virtual fingerboard. Helps student distinguish between high/low second finger, cello extensions, etc. Mac OS X.

Turtle Race - A game designed to teach pitch discrimination. Players inch a turtle along the race track by correctly identifying pitches as sharp, flat, or in tune. Each race becomes more challenging as the intervals get finer and the opponents get faster. Mac OS X.
