"Swimming for Gold" is another book of Joy Cowley's. This time the podcasters are Selena and Mubasshira from Room 15. Mubasshira tells us that this book is about a girl who uses a wheel chair to get about in on land, but is a very good swimmer. In fact she is a very good swimmer with a BIG heart. When disaster strikes and a boy lands up in the water, it is Esther who dives in and rescues him before the able bodied people around her do anything about it.

Drum is a stray dog who turns up in a small town and becomes sort of a town pet. The book talks about some of the adventures the kids in the town have with Drum. "Hark the Herald Angel" by William Taylor was read by Sela from Room 18 and her classmate Paulitia is her DJ for this latest episode of KPE. This is another book in a series about a boy called Charlie Kenny and his entertaining nemesis, Alice Pepper. The subscribers to KPE may well have listened to the podcasts we published about "Knitwits" and "Numbskulls" in previous years.
This book was just as much fun to read and it is based around the school Christmas play. Alice gets to produce the play and Charlie has to be 'Hark', which is of course the name of the Herald Angel.

Jarna and Seini-Mino have published their first podcast for KPE. It is about the book "Walking Lightly" by Fleur Beale. This story is about a rich girl called Millie who wasn't like the rich girls we see on TV. She didn't like shopping and stuff like that - in fact she didn't spend lots of money. She liked doing things outdoors that don't cost money like camping and tramping. Of course this didn't make her popular with the other girls in the class at her school for rich kids. They thought she was weird.

Shontal and Victoria from Room 18 discuss this book by another New Zealand author. It is about a girl called Erin who has never had any doubt about what she wants to do when she leaves school. She wants to be a farmer like her father and mother. Erin loves being on her family farm for the school holidays. Trouble is, Erin gets stuck with the boring chores and her parents don't think she's capable of much else. Try as she will, Erin finds that the boring jobs around the farm don’t keep her from daydreaming and, as a result, neither of her parents has any confidence in her ability to concentrate and complete a job properly. Things, however, have a habit of changing and Erin has to call on all her concentration and resourcefulness to help her father after he has an accident on the farm.

Cruz and Blessing talk to us about this incredible story about a boy called Angus who discovers something moving in a can of spaghetti he opens. He believes the spaghetti is alive but nobody else seems concerned at his amazing discovery! His mother is too busy to look and his sister thinks it’s just another practical joke. So Angus takes the spaghetti to school and tries to get help from the teachers. They can’t help so Angus consults rocket scientist Dr Von Brawn, who even rings up NASA, but no luck! An Italian chef and a worm farmer have a part in this story too.The book seems to have some pretty 'yuck' things in it from what we hear, but they really enjoyed reading it.
We wonder how many of you like eating spaghetti out of a can? Or do you prefer real spaghetti?

"Seadog" by Dorothy Butler
Taiapa and Mokani have really enjoyed reading Seadog and recommend this tale of Old New Zealand to us. Dorothy Butler seems to like writing stories set in New Zealand over a 100 years ago and we learn lots about life for the early settlers from these books. Last year Kayla and Crystal entertained us with another one of her old tales, "By Jingo".
"Seadog" is set in the wild west coast of Waitakere in 1890. It tells the story of a 10 year old boy called Joseph who is disabled and what happens when a dog comes from the sea and befriends him.

They have chosen a book that fits with the school-wide Inquiry for term 4 -"Go For Green" The book is called "Recycled" by Sandy MacKay and as you can guess by the title it is a story based around the theme that is very important at Pt England School at the moment; reduce, reuse and recycle. We enjoy reading books by Sandy Mackay as she is one of our favourite authors. She came to Pt England School a couple of years ago and published a podcast herself with Alosina, one of our past pupils.

"The Pipi Swing" by Sarona Aiono-Iosefa Malama and Kathleen tell us about this cool New Zealand book that talks about something most New Zealanders do every Summer. Even if you have never called it 'the pipi swing', when they start telling you about it you will know what they are talking about. You know when you go to collect pipis, and you dig your toes in the sand and start swivelling your feet so your toes go under the sand until they feel the pipis? And then you bend down and pick them up before a wave washes over you? Well, that's the pipi swing.

"The Cindy Limpics" by Michael Wilson
Caleb and Ibyss review a story from the School Journals. This was a story inspired by the Sydney Olympics in September 2000 and their class had been reading lots of books and stories about the Olympics in Term 3 because of the Beijing Olympics.
In this story Cindy Baxter is determined to do well at her class Olympic Games. But Cindy is accident-prone and her training sessions always seem to end in disaster.
This funny story tells us about a series of incidents that eventually wind up with Cindy (who is injured) having an Olympic event made up especially for her. We think you will like this story.

"Brodie" by Joy Cowley
Karen and Robin chose to podcast this book because they really liked it when their teacher read it to the class. In this book everyone in the class knew that Brodie was sick, but they thought he'd get better. Maybe it was because he talked a lot about being a chopper pilot. Brodie was a really talented artist as well and he shared a lot of his dreams with them through his artwork. This book is a happy, funny, sad book that talks about how the class support a very sick friend when he is in hospital and how they cope when he passes away. We are sure you will enjoy their podcast and their discussion about how Karen felt last year when she was sick in the Starship.

"Not Nice Stories" by John Parker
Xeneqe and Tanisha are both in Year 6 and they bring us a very entertaining podcast about a book with 4 short stories. By the sounds of it each of the stories is pretty wacky and very funny. They are the kinds of stories created around 'What if..?" situations. They tell us about one of the stories in great detail - "Superbrain". In this story, Barney Jordan, who is an impressive speller, decides that always eating sheep’s brains is the reason why he always achieves top marks in school tests. Things start to happen though, and his behaviour starts to demonstrate some very scarily sheep-like characteristics.

They stay in a hut in the bush and have a lot of experiences that Michael doesn’t really enjoy at first. And you will have guessed that they end up having some pretty exciting adventures together.

"Tahi: One Lucky Kiwi" by Melanie Drewery was podcast for KPE by Caprice and John. This wonderful book was the winner of the Picture Book category in the 2008 New Zealand Post Book Awards.
It’s the story of a boy who for his news item at school tells the class about coming across a kiwi caught in a possum trap, and how the kiwi lost his leg in the trap and had an artificial one made for it. Anyone who knows how to count in Maori will understand why the kiwi was named Tahi!

'Pania of the Reef' by Peter Gossage. Rasil and Iese introduce this well known and loved New Zealand story. This is a legend about a sea maiden called Pania who lived on the reef. She fell in love with a man who lived on land and they had a son called Moremore. Every morning Pania would return to her sea people, but her husband was afraid that one night she would not return with their son but stay with the sea people. He tried to keep Pania on land by placing cooked food next to her and their son while they were asleep but his plan didn’t work and she did go back to the sea people never to return.

This book remains a favourite not only for its sweet topic, but for the rhyme and rhythm of the text which is a delight to read aloud.

It is a lovely picture book telling us about the adventures a small boy and his Nana have with a cardboard box. There's no looking back for Nana when she takes an adventurous drive with her grandson. They dodge dangers in the sky, get a little bit lost, check out what's happening under the sea and survive a crash landing!

The girls enjoyed this wacky story about a girl called Peggy who lives on a pig farm and gets teased all the time by her classmates who have horses for their pets. Peggy's pet is a pig called Laffy and one day after the kids have been teasing her again she tells them she is entering Laffy in the local kids' horse-racing derby. She she will be racing against them - on a pig!

This well known classic children's story is retold by Gavin and the boys enjoy the retelling and the art work on the book. In keeping with the fact that in this version of the story it is an acorn that falls on Chicken Licken's head, Gavin Bishop has used an autumn setting for his story. It's bad enough that Tom follows her "all hobbledy-bobbledy" around the house--no need for him to take after her brother Danny, a no-goodnik drifter. In Portable Ghosts, Margaret Mahy skilfully blends modern technology, humour, suspense human values, sibling relationships, boy-girl friendship, and mystery, into a fast-paced adventure story. The notion of ghosts existing has always been a staple part of children’s literature but in Portable Ghosts, this is given a novel twist. The idea that ghosts can be carried around and actually become portable is a novel, very clever, and slightly zany addition to the ghost story genre.

When Cody falls from his skateboard and bangs his head he is suddenly able to hear his dog talking to him. This proves to be very beneficial as Bix seems to know a lot about natural balance and is able to help Cody improve his skateboarding techniques.

"The Tree Hut Treaty" by Wiremu Grace. Shonty Lee and Jaydn from Room 15 bring you this episode. They tell us about the story and also give us an overview of the Treaty of Waitangi as they discuss the themes of the book. This is the first published podcast for these two Year 5 students. The picture book follows the adventures of four young New Zealanders looking for a way to resolve a disagreement over a shared tree hut. They come up with the idea of a treaty and the book follows the process and principles that are agreed upon to create their treaty and resolve their disagreement.

This is a lovely story about a boy called Poutama who befriends a pair of Paradise Ducks. He follows the Putangitangi as they build a nest and lay eggs. He is greatly saddened when the mother duck is shot by a hunter.

The Frog Search was written and illustrated by Julia Crouth and published in 2002. Karen who reviews this book is in Room 14 and she is interviewed by her classmate Rose. Both girls are Year 5 students. In this book Josie finds some tadpoles in the pond. She makes a home for them in an old fish tank, feeds them on water weeds and notices how they change. When the biggest tadpole becomes a frog she cares for it until the time comes to return it to the pond.

Their whole class has been enjoying reading this very kiwi Christmas book in the lead up to Christmas. They have also learned a rap which goes with the book, and this podcast features some very enthusiastic rapping from the whole class of 6 and 7 year olds.
