A classic example of the big knives favored by Rebel soldiers in the early days of the War of Northern Aggression, this knife has a blade over 12" long and is 17" overall. The reality was that most of these were sent home after the first fifty-mile march which probably accounts for the number of them that survive. But, many example of large Bowies have been dug from battlefields so not everyone gave up on them. This knife has a blade forged from "historic steel" of my own. A chunk of rock drill from the gold mines around Helena, Montana and found in my late Granddad's shop. It's been hardened and zone tempered and the tempering colors have been left as decoration and some slight rust protection. The iron guard is hand forged and left "in the white". The whole thing is brought together by means of the classic Southern technique, the peened, through-tang where the tang extends completely through the antler handle and is peened over at the pommel. Includes a sewn and riveted cowhide sheath.
