Artillery Short Sword | |||||||||||||||
This is a variation on a common theme in the world of Civil War edged weapons. The Artillery Short Sword is most familiar, at least in this country as the Model 1832 version. I've never cared for the looks of them. To me they seem overdone and fussy. However, at the same time period, other nations were producing their own variations of this weapon which was intended as a last ditch defence weapon for gun crews. In reality they tended to function as tokens of NCO rank and were used more for clearing brush than anything else. The Confederates, notoriously short on industrial might, (the background photo shows wrecked rebel cannon in front of the ruins of the Tredegar Iron Works, the South's only large industrial producer.) copied the Ames model as well as the French Model of 1835. This blade was based on a sword of European origin that may or may not have been copied by the Confederates. The stats are as follows: 15 1/2" double-edged blade, hand forged from salvaged spring steel, 19 1/2" long including a cast brass handle. Includes a cowhide over wood scabbard. Information on the casting of the handle can be found at the links below. $165 Shipping included in US To order or ask me a question, simply click on the "send me a message" button below.
