A jazz flute performance - Flame of Reality - Mortal Engine
I am a flutist, soprano and tenor saxophonist that plays Jazz and Latin music as well as being a composer, music teacher and Music producer. Frequently using computer based effects and sequencing in live performance, as well as in the studio. Playing since 1977, proffesional performances since 1982. Teaching flute, saxophone, recorder (flute a bec), clarinet, music composition, theory and performance techniques since 1987.
First impressed by the energy of old style rock and roll saxophonists and improvisations, I later developed a taste for Miles Davis's dark funk and the energy of 60's era free improvisations. Added to that is a knack for rhythm, funk, and the music of Africa and Cuba. I enjoy creating intense sound, from low flute whispers to roaring blues sax blasts. Now with live computer modulation, my sounds are heard at Hip Hop, Goa, and 'cross over' World Music dance parties. My career highlight has been working with 'The Puentes Brothers' and Jose Sanchez, and other great Cuban Musicians. I wrote and wailed with 'Mortal Engine', a driving, all originals Intensity Music band. I have played Funk and Acid Jazz with Mo Funk Collective and Soul Crib, Salsa and Merengue with Marlin Ramazinni, Orkestra La Clave y Tropicana, Rave and dance parties with Scott Bishop ( now with Blue Man Group) and Myles Bigelow, Rock and Roll sax with the Fluff Girl burlesque shows and occasionally Swank, Jazz for many years with many groups. I have recorded with acclaim on cds by 'The New Pornographers', veejay Su Kin Lee, and on Alpha Yaya Dialo's Juno winning album. Currently I am working with Melonai Brisdon on a new live show and her upcoming album. I improvise and write constantly, and am always looking for projects to add intensity to.
I Perform in Vancouver B.C., Seattle Washington, Victoria B.C., throughout British Columbia, across Canada, and The Pacific Northwest of the United States.
In 1983 I won the Pacific Northwest Music Festival's 'Knights of Columbus Award' for best overall festival perfomances. The scholarship was used to attend masterclasses with Jeannie Baxstresser, Julius Baker and Donald Peck. Since then I have studied with Dave Holland, Roscoe Mitchel, Steve Colemann, Kevin Eubanks and others at The Banff Centre as well as with Jack Stafford, Dave Branter Jane Martin and many others in Vancouver B.C..
