Ukifune (literally, "drifting boat") is a structured improvisation for amplified viola and electronic track. The work is inspired by the plight of a miserable lady who appears in the final chapters of The Tale of Genji, a Japanese novel from the 11th century. Two men pursue her affections, and she is unable to choose one of them because she recognizes that they don't love her for who she is. They are in competition with each other and wish to gratify their own egos. My thanks to Daniel Corr, Jack Vees, and Keith Murphy for their help with creation of the tape part.
