David Heetderks (b. 1975) grew up near Washington DC and is currently a graduate student in music theory at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He has written pieces for flautist Sergio Pallottelli, percussion trio Loop 2.4.3, Evan Ziporyn of Bang on a Can All-Stars, the Gemini violin Duo, pianist Reto Reichenbach, and the Group435 string orchestra. Recent honors include a Young Composers' award from ASCAP, a commission from the Renee B. Fisher competition for a solo piano work, and a commission from Connecticut division of the Music Teachers National Association. His music has been featured at Music03 in Cincinnati, the Orleans piano competition in France, and the EARPLAY series in Berkeley. Eric Valliere of the San Francisco Classical Voice remarked of his Green Suite: violist Ellen Ruth Rose brought some real fire to the rapid sul ponticello figures and marcato attacks later in the piece. His Ukifune, created for the ensemble Clogs, has been recorded on their album Thoms Night Out and has been performed at the Kitchen in New York City and in Europe. Mr. Heetderks also creates works that employ his own capacities as a string player and improviser, such as Threes a Crowd for one performer simultaneously playing the viola, playing the piano, and singing, and Ukifune Remix for solo viola and tape. Mr. Heetderks is former co-coordinator of Sound Underground, an annual festival of new music and poetry in Connecticut, which has been featured on the radio station WPKN in Bridgeport. Mr. Heetderks has premiered pieces for solo viola by John Orfe and Alphonse Izzo. An active scholar, he has also delivered theoretical papers at student conferences and Music Theory Midwest. Mr. Heetderks studied composition at the Yale School of Music, where his main teachers included Ezra Laderman, Alvin Singleton, and David Del Tredici. |
