Alcohol is the anaesthesia by which we endure the operation of life -George Bernard Shaw

As promised (about a year ago!) I've finally got around to writing about the Bulstrode and Duke of Cambridge. Plus a few others...

 The Bulstrode:

This used to be the venue for work dos, and so I have many happy memories of this place, and its large 1st floor function room. It has since been abandoned in favour of newer, flashier venues that "offer more". I think its location right by the tube station means they can rely on a great deal of passing trade, so they don't need to try too hard to attract custom. They have a very poor range of bitters for the beards, and a bog standard food menu (though much more appetising than that revolting Gutbuster menu they used to have that for some reason feaured an overweight pig). Good points are the pool table and jukebox. And the mix of workers popping in for a "quick one" does give it a pleasant atmosphere. Not a bad place, I just think it could be better.

 The Duke of Cambridge:

OK I admit that I haven't been in this place since it proudly advertised itself as being "under new management"a few months ago. But seeing as the new owners' first act seems to have been to paint the exterior of the place an especially unattractive shade of puke yellow I'm not sure I hold out much hope for the interior. The "Meat Raffles" they used to hold seem to have been replaced by a quiz night and bands. I have been assured that the story about Hendix's first UK gig being here is true though.

 The Coach and Horses:

Like the superb Bell, this place is a John Barras pub and so is fairly cheap, and interestingly also has some odd roulette wheel thing behind the bar. What are these things for? This is a barn-sized place with a remarkable amount of tellys - more than Dixons - dotted about. They have the commendable practice of keeping the lager glasses in the fridge. I wish more places would do this rather than fill them up with ridiculous alcopops.

 Tankerville:

OK, the Tankerville's bitten the dust. Is anyone suprised?! Old review is on the graveyard page. Rereading it, I must say I was far too kind to this place...
