What is it?

Drag BBC "Listen Again" links to the Stream Recorder window and they will be converted to MP3 format and imported into iTunes)

Stream recorder is a Mac application (OSX Tiger and above) that I wrote to let me listen to radio programmes on my iPod. It records RealPlayer streams as MP3s and imports them into iTunes.

How do you use it?

As an example, open Stream Recorder, open a browser at:

BBC Radio 4's Listen Again Page

And then drag one of the "Listen" links onto the Stream Recorder window. After a few moments it will start to record the radio programme as an MP3 file on your Desktop. A half hour programme will take half an hour to record. Once it has finished, it will import the file into iTunes.

Licensing, source et al

Stream Recorder is a Java wrapper for MPlayer, Lame and the Helix RealPlayer libraries. The Real libraries are released under the RealNetworks Public Source License Version 1.0, whereas Lame, MPlayer and Stream Recorder are released under the GPL.

You can get the source code here. You will need to have Ant installed. To compile the code, use the command:

ant clean compile jar

The application will be created in the "application" subdirectory.

This software is only intended for fair use of broadcast material. It should not be used to archive broadcasts. Please be sensible and use this software as you would a tape recorder. For really high quality versions of programmes, please support public broadcasting and use the BBC Shop.
