Dog Soldiers
7/10

The horror genre seems to have become typified by American slasher movies that consist of pneumatic blonde women screaming their heads off in clothes that are as threadbare as the plot. However I think the true spirit of horror lies in no budget films that can't show the terrible monster for too long for fear of the audience descending into hysterics at the lousy make up. On that basis Dog Soldiers is classic horror through and through.

A group of soldiers find themselves stranded in a remote part of Scotland with a group of werewolves debating whether a French of Australian red goes best with human intestines. What's worse is that they are also missing the England versus Germany football match.

The were werewolves all look like something hammer rejected 50 years ago and you can probably even spot the cobwebs on the DVD version, but the lack of fancy special effects is more than matched by the imagination of the script. A fantastic collection of one liners are complemented by the site of soldiers having their guts superglued back in and a mutilated cow falling from the sky without warning. All in all, bleeding great fun.
