Listed as 48, single and a bookkeeper for a transfer company with her widowed father in the 1930 census at 729 Clark St. Listed as Eva M. Burns in 1932 voter registration as documented in her delayed birth certificate. She was living at 831 Clark St at the time. [Obituary] Iowa City Press-Citizen - Tuesday, 26 March 1974; Pg 2A Eva M. burns, 92, formerly of 831 south Clark street, died Monday at a local nursing home, following a lengthy illness. Funeral services are set for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Beckman-Butherus Funeral Home, the Rev. C. Dendy Garrett officiating. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery. Visitation will begin at the funeral home at 4 p.m. today. Born Jan. 4, 1882 in West Liberty (sic), she was the daughter of Jacob and Mattie Swartz Wells. She moved to Iowa City as a child, attended public schools here, and was married to Lee Burns. She was employed for a number of years as a bookkeeper and cashier at several Iowa City firms. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Royal Neighbors and the Daughters of the American Revolution. A niece and three nephews survive. Her husband and a brother died earlier. |
