WILFRED D. SPENCER JR., CITY TEACHER

NORTHAMPTON - Wilfred D. Spencer Jr., 54, of 51 Clark St., Florence, died Thursday in The Cooley Dickinson Hospital.

Born in Northampton, March 6, 1938, he was the son of the late Wilfred D. Spencer and Mary (McCarthy) Spencer.

He was a social studies teacher for 28 years at the John F. Kennedy Middle School in Northampton, where he also served as business manager.

Mr. Spencer attended Holyoke Community College, and received his bachelor's degree from Springfield College. He received his master's degree in history from the University of Massachusetts.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Annunciation Church in Florence, and a member of the Air National Guard.

He was also a member of the National Education Association, the Massachusetts Teachers Association, the Northampton Teachers Association, the Northampton Historical Association, Historic Northampton, and Friends of Old Deerfield.

He was a past board member of the Florence Business and Civic Directors Association, and a member of the Custer Battlefield Association, the Bozeman Fort Phil Karney Association, and a member of the Northampton Revolver Club and Northampton Bicentennial Organization.

He leaves his wife, the former Jean-Ann Dostal of Florence, and several neices and nephews.

The funeral will be held Monday at 9:15 a.m., from the Drozdal Funeral Home in Northampton, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Annunciation Church.

Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Northampton.

Calling hours at the funeral home are Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to the Wilfred D. Spencer Jr. Award, in care of Richard Carnes, JFK Middle School, Bridge Road, Northampton, 01060.
