This project is part of my Organizational Communication course at Marymount Manhattan College. Taking our cue from Howard Rheingold and his concept of "Smart Mobs"--organizations or publics empowered by mobile communication technologies-- the "Art Mobs" student team used mobile text messaging and podcasting to allow guests of an art gallery to experience art in a new way. Along with the Department of Art and the NYC mobile arts organization YellowArrow, my students and I hosted a gallery event on Dec. 8, 2004, in Manhattan to showcase these technologies. We reprised the project in the Spring of 2005, producing unnoficial audio guides to the Museum of Modern Art, NYC, which we made available as podcasts.
