DANIEL OSTLING BIOGRAPHY

Daniel Ostling is a freelance Scenic Designer based in Chicago with a second residence in NYC.

Recent designs include “Lucia di Lammermoor” (Metropolitan Opera/ NYC), “The Glorious Ones” (Lincoln Center Theater/ NYC, Pittsburg Public), "Argonautika" (Berkeley Repertory). "Lookingglass Alice" (McCarter/ Princeton, New Victory/ NYC), “Mirror of the Invisible World” (Goodman/ Chgo), “Durango” (Public Theatre/ NYC, Long Wharf), “Argonautika” (Lookingglass), “the Pain and the Itch” (Playwright’s Horizon/ NYC), “Monsieur Proust” (About Face/ Chgo), "A Flea in Her Ear" (Chicago Shakespeare), "Celebrity Row" (Portland Center Stage), "UP" (Oregon Shakespeare Festival), "Pericles" (Goodman/ Chgo, Shakespeare Theatre/ DC), "the Pain and the Itch" (Steppenwolf), "Winesburg Ohio" (Arden/ Philadelphia), "Hillbilly Antigone" (Lookingglass).

He has worked at numerous regional theatres including The Brooklyn Academy of Music, The New York Shakespeare Festival, La Jolla Playhouse, Berkeley Repertory, Seattle Repertory, Perseverance, and the Mark Taper Forum among others.

Opera designs include “Lucia di Lammermoor” (Metropolitan Opera/ NYC), "Ainadmar" (Tanglewood Music Festival, LA Philharmonic), Phillip Glass’ "Galileo Galilei" (BAM/ NYC, Barbican/ London, Goodman/ Chicago), "Suor Angelica" and "Gianna Schicchi" (San Francisco Opera Center).

Internationally he designed "Pacific Overtures" (The Donmar Warehouse/ London) and "Metamorphoses" (Melbourne Theatre Company/ Australia) and "Galileo Galilei" (Barbican/ London).

Mr. Ostling is an ensemble member of Lookingglass Theatre Company in Chicago. He works extensively with director Mary Zimmerman having designed numerous production including "Metamorphoses" for which he was nominated for a 2002 Tony Award.

Upcoming projects include “Brain People” (ACT/SF), “Sonnambula” (Metropolitan Opera/ NYC), “Merry Widow” (Lyric Opera/ Chgo), "Argonautika" (Shakespeare Theatre/ D.C., McCarter).

Mr. Ostling is an Associate Professor of theatrical design at Northwestern University in Evanston.
