A few years ago, I acquired a Toshiba T2150CDT laptop. This is a rather old laptop; I found a Byte review praising it as a very nice little multimedia portable, cheaper than the Thinkpad but almost as good. But that was 1995. (And it cost its original owner around $5K US to buy it, at least according to Byte.) It's a 486 though, not exactly what you'd think of as high-end now.

But hey, it was free. It'd been in a closet for a few years. I figured, okay, put Linux on it, make it work. This is the story of how that went. If you've found one in a closet, at a flea market, or whatever, you might be interested in the following info.

The T2150CDT has a 2-spin ATAPI CD-ROM, serial port, Centronics, XGA card, internal sound card, and two PCMCIA type II slots (with a really cool door system setup; look at the photo - that's my network card dongle sticking out the left side of the laptop, it looks like it's just a direct connection to the computer; it almost works like two really small drive bays). There's no internal modem, and no Ethernet (without a PCMCIA card). The internal HD is 500MB, and there's an external floppy drive which uses a proprietary connector. The base machine came with 8MB of RAM, expandable up to 32MB. The one I have has 24MB. RAM may be hard to find for this ancient machine, but at least it's a standard: Small Outline SIMM. Not a standard I'd ever heard of before, but there you go; predecessor to SO-DIMM, I guess.

I started with the 7-disk set of Debian Woody I have lying around. I tried booting from disc 1; no dice, the BIOS doesn't support booting from CD. So I made the two floppies, and booted the installation system from them.

No problems. I've never seen an ATAPI two-spin CD-ROM drive before, but I guess there had to be one. Anyway, boot-floppies picked up the CD just fine, and I continued the install.

By the way, if you're afraid of deleting your entire HD, don't be. I wiped the HD clean in the debian install, and well, the BIOS made sure I kept a free partition available for booting the Toshiba proprietary setup program (which is stored on the HD). So the Toshiba setup program cannot be made unavailable. Press <ESC> on boot to access it, once the laptop's finished error-checking its RAM. It'll give you a whiny error message, tell you to "check your configuration," and then let you in to the BIOS settings once you hit F1.

X11

So I worked on installing things, getting the system into a usable state. The hardest part was X. The default config of XFree86 4 will not work right, at ;east not under Debian. You can select the VESA driver, but the VGA chip is not fully VESA compliant.

I was running xserver-svga (an XFree86 3 server) on it, which works fine. Note that this X server is no longer in sid or sarge, though. However, I got an email from somebody who said he'd run XFree86's configure utility. I didn't do this; I'm kind-of an X newbie. :) This is the graphic driver info he was using.

Driver "chips"
BusID "ISA"

I tried this configuration in the debconf screens, and - lo and behold - it worked. I have my complete XFree86 4 config here.

Also, your LCD screen's max resolution is 640x480. So even though the chip can output 1024x768, unless you're connecting to a projector, there's no point.

Here's the video mode information from the manual. The video mode I use is emphasized. This machine features the ultra-bizarre 18-bit color mode, for 256K colors. The LCD screen is capable of displaying that many colors. I don't use it though, as the video card doesn't have enough RAM to do full 18-bit color in 640x480; you have to go paletted to get all the colors. And paletted video is the ick.

TCP/IP

I spent a long time trying to get PLIP working. Don't bother. Even in "bidirectional" mode, the Centronics port isn't fully bidirectional and won't handle PLIP. (Although it was kinda funny being able to transmit pings but not receive pongs. :) I have a 3Com 3c589 in there now, which works fine under pcmcia_cs. I used the 3c509 to upgrade the laptop to Sid; effective little card. Presumably a PCMCIA or RS-232 modem would also work as well.

Sound

The sound card is really SoundBlaster compatible, and seems to work fine under the OSS sb driver. I used the Red Hat sndconfig utility to get sound working. At one point, I had some troubles with xmcd, but I think that's just my own stupidity. (Apparently it was; as soon as I made this note, the problems went away. I think it has to do with me not noticing that I've bumped the volume dial down with my wrist.)

More on the sound problems. There seems to be a problem where the CD-ROM drive reports to Linux that the tray door is open when it's not. I suspect that this is a hardware problem; it usually happens when I'm resting my wrist on, well, the wrist rest. :) Can't rule out a kernel bug, but it seems unlikely. This problem could be unique to my unit too; after all, it was in a closet for several years. I haven't been inside the case yet, so I don't know what's happening inside.

This little laptop can play mp3s! Okay, it doesn't sound great, but it works. In Debian, use the package mpg123-oss-i486, and run mpg123 with the -m option (it's too slow to handle full stereo mixing). Works pretty well, and mpg123/mpg321 frontends can pretty it up nicely. I used gqmpeg for a while, but then wrote my own in perl.

PCMCIA, APM & Kernel Options

There's no CardBus, and also (it's a 486!) no PCI. So you can leave PCI off your kernel compiles, and you need a 16-bit network card (or modem, for you poor bastards who don't have broadband). Also, you need to turn off CardBus and PNP support when compiling the pcmcia-cs modules; CardBus depends on PCI, but PNP doesn't, but PNP doesn't work on this laptop (it's a 486 :)

It supports APM 1.1. No ACPI as far as I know (seems unlikely anyway). There's only one problem with the APM support: if PCMCIA is running when it's suspended, the laptop goes insane when it comes back up. Unfortunately, in the default configuration, Debian doesn't run pcmcia stop during suspend. I have a script that runs /etc/init.d/pcmcia stop before suspend, and then runs /etc/init.d/pcmcia start after resume. Also, you might want to disable the Auto Display Off feature in the BIOS. It kicks in when you suspend the laptop, and when you resume, the laptop doesn't automagically turn its screen back on. This is not a major irritant; pressing the shift key causes the display to reappear. Still, turn it off, it's annoying. And besides, the Linux APM support turns the screen off automagically anyway, so the BIOS feature is unnecessary.

Toshset, tuxtime, toshutils, etc. all work fine on this laptop, as long as your kernel has the Toshiba laptop extensions compiled in. I ran 2.2.25 with the pcmcia-cs modules for a while. I haven't tried it (yet), but the external serial port ought to take a null modem cable okay, or a Real RS-232 modem (assuming you still have one that works; all mine are dead).

Okay, here are some debs. These debs will get you up and running with a 2.2.25 kernel, with full PCMCIA support. The cardbus drivers have been disabled, as you'll never need them on the 486.

Kernel image (793 KiB) Download
PCMCIA modules (244 KiB) Download
PCMCIA modules changes file (867 bytes) Download
Kernel docs (1.1 MiB) Download
Kernel headers (1.8 MiB) Download

All you should really need is the first two debs. Although the docs might be useful.

I had to hack the PCMCIA source file to get it to compile under make-kpkg. That 2.2 kernel image is compiled with PCI off, and when you do that, make-kpkg blows up when it hits the PCMCIA module compiles. I ought to report this as a bug, but oh well. You can see my hacked script here. Also, you have to compile the PCMCIA modules with PNP turned off, and normally, make-kpkg won't let you. How aggravating.

I recently revived the old laptop and put a 2.4 kernel on it, as the new glibc wants a 2.4 kernel. Here are debs for 2.4:

Kernel image (1.2 MiB) Download
Kernel docs (1.9 MiB) Download
Kernel headers (4.4 MiB) Download
Kernel source (29.5 MiB) Download

With the 2.4 kernel, all you need is the image file. Linux 2.4 contains built-in support for PCMCIA. This is fortunate, since as you can clearly see, everything in 2.4 is bigger.

You can also install the kernel images (either set) using apt-get. Put the following in your /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://homepage.mac.com/danflemming/debian kernels/

If you're using secure apt (etch or sid), you'll get a warning, as I haven't set up a secure apt archive. (I probably will when etch moves from testing to stable.) However, if you trust the network, you can just say Y when apt asks you, and the packages'll install anyway.

Here's my .config for the 2.2 kernel (generated using make menuconfig):

The cdrom drive shows up as hdc. So make sure /dev/hdc is owned by the cdrom group, or your users won't be able to mount it.

You could setup this machine to work as a NAT machine with two 10BaseT cards. I don't do this; my firewall's a desktop. But the 486 is strong enough to run either NAT or a simple SOCKS setup passably (at least, unless you have a T3 line). However, if you do this, you'll probably want to compile your own kernel; mine has all the firewall features disabled.

I have the manual as a PDF here. Well anyway, most of it. The illustrations seem to be broken in that version. I will attempt to restore them Real Soon Now; I have a printed copy of the manual and a scanner. (But don't hold your breath. :) Don't bother looking on Toshiba's site for information though; this machine is just too old, there's very little there.

I ran xdm, the Oroborus window manager and Desklaunch on the T2150CDT for a while. That setup works pretty well, if you're using it as a standalone machine. I leave it sleeping most of the time; it takes about a minute to boot and log me in. So I just leave it snoozing & bring it up when I want it.

The biggest problem with X programs is usually widgets. Programs use too much screen space, and won't fit on the 640x480. I currently use Lynx as a web browser, Filerunner & NCFTP for FTP, rxvt, xmcd, and Ted-gtk for word processing. Ted outputs RTFs, although it doesn't really fit all that well on the 640x480 either; I wish I could figure out a way to change its zoom. Perhaps I am just an idiot, but I can't find one. I may just go to xjed and use Ted strictly as a formatter for conversion to MS Word format (handy at Kinko's). Abiword really doesn't fit on my screen, though. I'm beginning to experiment with Scite, which has the ultra-cool feature of being able to output PDFs. It seems reasonably responsive, but we'll see how it copes with really big files. Still, word wrap, PDFs, yay!

I've also used the laptop as an X Terminal. I find it works pretty well with either Windowmaker or GNOME/Icewm. Well, GNOME 2, anyway. GNOME 1 would suck away all the screen space.

There's a volume control dial on the right-hand side of the laptop, near the headphone output. Make sure to turn it up when testing sound. It's really easy to leave it bumped all the way off. Louder is away from you.

The internal speaker is really crappy, but it works. Headphone output with decent headphones - or even decent powered speakers - sounds much better.

To feed my solitaire habit, I run pat2 and oonsoo. Pretty much all the other games are either (a) ugly or (b) too big for my screen, or (c) 3D. Forget playing 3D games. Just forget it. :) (Even Freedroid. Jeeze, guys, the original Paradroid ran on a 1MHz machine. What's with you?)

I created four icons for desklaunch, that work as an iconbar, for lock, logout, restart & shutdown. You can get them here.

This machine is basically the same as the T2150CDS, except that it has an extra 4MB of internal RAM and a TFT screen, where the S has an STN display. Either will take up to 24MB of extra RA (so the S peaks at 28MB, and this unit at 32MB).

There's also a Toshiba T2155CDT and T2155CDS. Apparently they have the same hardware, but the 2155s had more bundled software. That would make no difference for a Linux system, obviously.

You can email me with questions about this laptop if you like. Keep in mind that I get an avalanche of spam each day; do not change the subject heading for fear of sudden deletion, and expect slow responses. ;) My GnuPG public key is available.
