ABOUT HYPNOSIS

-----------------------

A Brief History of Hypnosis

Actually, hypnosis predates the human race, as any animal that sleeps and dreams can experience hypnosis. However, as a healing discipline, hypnosis has been around since the time of Franz Anton Mesmer (who gave hypnosis its original name of Mesmerism). Mesmer believed hypnosis was "animal magnetism," and even used magnets and metal rods in his demonstrations.

Hypnosis developed slowly over time. The term "Hypnosis" was coined by James Braid, a 19th century physician who brought hypnosis to the modern world. Later Sigmund Freud used hypnosis extensively. Perhaps the most famous physician to use hypnosis was Milton Erickson, who has been called the Mozart of hypnosis.

More recently, John Kappas developed a theory of hypnotic suggestibility that made hypnosis accessible to all, rather than just the hypnotic somnambulists who make up about 25% of the population. Kappas also founded the Hypnosis Motivation Institute, the only accredited school dedicated solely to the teaching of hypnotherapists. Most TRY HYPNOSIS.com hypnotherapists were educated at HMI.

What is the relationship between hypnosis and medicine?

Hypnosis is considered a complimentary practice to medicine, like accupuncture, homeopathy and chiropractic. Hypnotherapists may not treat medical conditions without a referral from a physician. In fact, for many medical conditions, the addition of hypnotherapy optimizes traditional medical treatments.

In the medical community, a long-standing disregard of complimentary therapies is falling away, and physicians are becoming much more open to including hypnotherapy as part of a treatment.

It is not unusual for a hypnotherapist to ask a client to get a medical referral for certain issues, and we will always work with your primary care physician to optimize your results. Of course, if you are looking to improve your golf game through hypnosis, your doctor would only be involved when you beat him or her at golf!

How effective is hypnosis?

As with other forms of therapy, results vary between individuals - and in fact, even the same individual may have different results from hypnosis in two different situations. The effectiveness of hypnotherapy is enhanced by working with a trained hypnotherapist, such as those working with TRY HYPNOSIS.com. Also, a positive outlook and belief in achieving the desired change are helpful, but not necessary.

With hypnotherapy, there are never side effects, as often occurs with traditional medications

What happens in hypnotherapy?

A course of hypnotherapy may be as short as a single session, with most clients taking between five and twenty sessions. Sessions are usually held weekly, but may occur more or less frequently. What happens in hypnotherapy depends very much on the issue being addressed. More often than not, the first session is dedicated toward presenting a "suggestion to rehypnosis," which makes later sessions much more effective.

The "suggestion to rehypnosis" conditions a client to enter the hypnotic state very quickly and deeply in follow-up sessions - with a specific hypnotherapist. It does not mean you can be hypnotized by anyone else in the same way!

Subsequent sessions will be guided by the clients' goals. Most clients feel "something" within a few days of their first session, and notice results specifically related to their goals within a week of their second session.

How can I get more out of hypnotherapy?

It is true that not every client benefits equally from hypnotherapy. So, what can you do to stack the odds in your favor? Well, more important than anything else is attitude. If you want to prove that hypnotherapy doesn't work (at least for yourself), then you will succeed in doing exactly that. This makes sense, since hypnotherapy enables you to achieve the goal you select. It seems odd that someone might actually pay for a hypnotherapist to prove it doesn't work! What is more likely is that a subconscious doubt or fear may interfere with your results. So, keep a positive attitude and believe in your own success!

It is equally important not to view hypnotherapy as magic. For example, hypnotherapy can be a powerful tool to help a smoker quit. But it does not eliminate the need for effort on the smoker's part. If a quit smoking client comes in with a desire to quit and the willingness to stick with the six-week program, they are likely to be able to leave tobacco behind.

The powerful combination that brings RESULTS with hypnotherapy is BELIEF + MOTIVATION + HYPNOTHERAPY = SUCCESS!
