This time, the police blotter:

Alfalfa field damaged

STONEFORT - Saline County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating damage done by someone "doing doughnuts" in a Stonefort alfalfa field.

Arthur O'Keefe, 64, Stonefort, told Deputy Mike Jones during the night of Oct. 16 someone drove into his field on Davenport Road .3 miles off of Tom Dick Hill Road doing significant damage, according to a Saline County Sheriff's report.

O'Keefe requested extra patrol of the area.

I read my hometown paper with great affection, I really do. I mean, on the one hand, yes, I do find the name "Tom Dick Hill Road" somewhat amusing. But I'm also proud to be from a place that sports a "Tom Dick Hill Road."

I remember reading a short piece by southern writer Roy Blount Jr on why he lives where he lives. Blount said he was proud to live in a place where one could find bullet holes in the road signs, although he did not feel it was his role to put them there. I guess that's kind of how I feel about Stonefort (my great-grandfather kept the general store in Stonefort, and my grandmother grew up there) alfalfa field off of Tom Dick Hill Road.

My family's farm--thankfully, no doughnuts as of this writing.
