Mo SpotesWhen I was growing up, I used to get my sports
scores from Channel 6, out of Paducah (Kentucky), and my sisters and I used to
love to hear the sportscaster announce that, coming up after the break, there
would be "mo spotes."
So that's what that means. Baseball is deep in my blood, and I'm sorry as can be that the season is drawing to a close. I had high hopes this year that my team, the St Louis Cardinals, would at least make it back to the playoffs or, more importantly, finish higher in the standings than the hated Chicago Cubs. (It would have been fine with me if Milwaukee had won the division, so long as the Cards finished ahead of the Cubs.) But no. And I had higher hopes that my backup team, the hometown Angels, would go deep into the playoffs, perhaps even all the way. But no. (A recent article somewhere...I think Slate...took Hilary to task for her claim to be a fan of both the Cubs and the Yankees. But you can, in fact, root for a National League team and an American League team. That's totally legit. Interleague play being, like the Designated Hitter, a thing of Satan, you can easily put it behind you.) The Rockies are currently battling the Diamondbacks for the NL pennant, and, to be honest, I'm trying very hard to care. But it's hard. In the AL, it's easier to care, because the Red Sox are just awful, awful, awful, and so we want to see them lose. Besides, Cleveland rocks. The Rockies are the better story, though, and Clint Hurdle, their manager, was once a Cardinal with a lot of promise--Whitey Herzog liked him a lot, which makes him practically a saint--and so I'll root for them. All right, my one sports post for the year is over. I'm pleased with this picture I took this summer of Albert Pujols, though, so I'll include it too:
