My Hometown

I like to keep up with the news from my hometown, so I often check in to the Harrisburg Daily Register's --the local paper--web site. Here's what is going on today:

Roaming cow proves very elusive
By Eric Fodor, Staff Writer

HARCO - A black cow has been reported roaming loose over a relatively large area north of Carrier Mills.

The medium-sized cow has a greenish-yellow tag in its ear. The animal was seen around 6 p.m. Sunday on the Haulage Road just north of Carrier Mills. The cow was reported on Burger Hill a few days ago, according to Sheriff Keith Brown. Sightings have also been reported around Lighthouse Baptist Church, Harco Road and new state Route 13.

The elusive cow flees into the woods when confronted by law enforcement.

"He has evaded the Harrisburg Police and us both out there," Brown said.

"But we want to get the cow reunited with its owner."

Besides being lost property, a cow is a potential traffic hazard -- a car striking a cow could cause a great deal of vehicle damage.

Anyone who knows where the cow belongs, or who knows of someone in the area north of Carrier Mills to Harco may contact the Sheriff's Department...

I especially like it that the byline of this news story is "Harco" which is, actually, less a "town" and more of a "road." In my day it was referred to as the "Harco blacktop," Harco an abbreviation for Harrisburg Coal, which once upon a time employed a lot of the folks who lived on that road.

You may have heard that Bruce Springsteen has a new disc out tomorrow. I don't think it can possibly live up to the hype, but I'm looking forward to it. Here's a cover of one of my favorite Springsteen songs (not the least because I remember sitting on my dad's lap while he drove the car....an experience I was not able to share with my own son, who wasn't even able to ride in the front seat until he was twelve) by the front man from Jason & The Scorchers:
