Give Me Weed, Whites and Wine*

I'm only a couple days away from departing on my On The Road journey--30 days away from home, 10 nights in motels, 6000 miles in my Prius. I may blog from the road, but frankly I doubt it. (I will post pictures, however: click the link on the sidebar. Pictures of what, exactly, will remain to be seen, of course. Roadside America and me are old friends.)

Way, way, way, too many great songs about cars and roads and ramblin' and keys to the highway. I'm not even going to try. But because I do like sharing great cuts, here are a few that reference cities I'll either be staying overnight in or spending some time in (more than just blasting through).

Willin' has to be included, because we'll stay in Tucumcari, and there aren't many songs about Tucumcari, but I had trouble choosing my favorite version (heck, it's hard to choose my favorite Little Feat version...). This one is from the Sailin' Shoes album.

And I know there are probably songs about US cities between Tulsa and Allentown, but heck. We'll spend most of a day at the Gettysburg battlefield, but other than that we're just barreling along until we get to Maine. A night in Allentown, and that gives Billy Joel a chance to show that he could actually do some good stuff.

Neil Young, Albuquerque

Little Feat, Willin'

Emmylou Harris, Amarillo

Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, Take Me Back To Tulsa

Billy Joel, Allentown

The first leg

And the second leg

*Rest assured, neither weed nor whites will be a part of this journey.
