This is an amazing zine. At 88 pages it is certainly one of the heftiest small-press artzines I’ve ever seen. And it has quite an impressive roster of contributors (partial listing below). In addition, the covers are in color (rare in 1982) and the printing is of generally high quality. While this is certainly not a good choice for the easily offended (lots of sexually explicit material in this one) it is clearly one of the single most impressive zines of the 1980s.
cover untitled illustration
MICHAEL RODEN applies his skills as a colorist to the famous ALBRECHT DURER rhinoceros print. The background is also by MR. The masthead is by TOM BRINKMANN. This is a truly wonderful cover!
page 2 untitled drawing
Stylized drawing of a nude Egyptian woman. Notable as the only nude drawing MICHAEL RODEN has ever published. Border figures are by TOM BRINKMANN.
page 39 untitled
Extraordinarily mysterious pictorial narrative with captions taken from the EGYPTIAN BOOK OF THE DEAD. This one is about as esoteric as it gets.
pages 48-50 Nautical Space
Wow. Incredible wordless collage story (with some drawn elements) combining the mysteries of the deep with the mysteries of deep space. This story contains some of the finest MICHAEL RODEN collage work ever.
page 87 Sonic Wallpaper
Multi-artist illustration which includes a hideous monster by TOM BRINKMANN, a weird landscape and a Viking by MICHAEL RODEN, a cyclopean minotaur by JIM RYAN, and an addict eyeball by BILL SHUT. It really is as wonderfully bizarre as it sounds.
In addition to the above, this incredible zine includes contributions by the following fine artists:
page 5 BRUCE N. DUNCAN (Hank and Hannah – There ain’t no difference.)
page 30 E. H. DORN (untitled collage)
page 40 TOM BRINKMANN (Huh?)
page 43 BILL SHUT (untitled collage-drawing)
page 46 CHARLES SCHNEIDER (amazing untitled drawing)
pages 51-54 BRUCE N. DUNCAN (portfolio of erotic Drawings)
page 57 CHARLES SCHNEIDER (two untitled drawings)
pages 67-73 KAREN MURTAGH (Erotic Drawings)
page 78 BRUCE N. DUNCAN (Hank and Hannah – Tiff.)
back cover BILL SHUT (untitled drawing with color separations by MR)
