This title functioned primarily as a showcase for the artistic talents of MR friend and collaborator ED H. DORN. In addition to acting as editor and publisher of this title, MR contributed a rather basic title page. As described in an early catalog of Thru Black Holes titles (THRU BLACK HOLES PUBLICATIONS, page 4), this issue includes "11 full page drawings, plus a Mini-Gallery of small illustration. Artwork based on the works of H. P. Lovecraft, depicting particularly macabre scenes in E. H. Dorn's demonic style." Note that there is a small illustration by FRODO (NNNGG!) included in The Mini-Gallery.
Two of the three issues of PORTALS OF MADNESS (Vol. 1 No. 1 and Vol. 1 No. 3) are unnumbered. There are two variants of this issue, one with 12 pages and one with 10 pages (pages 8 and 9 of the 12-page variant are missing from the 10-page variant). Anyone who appreciates the macabre artwork of E. H. DORN will want to acquire copies of all three issues of this title.
